I don't mind adverts as long as the don't cover up the whole screen. I am also unable to close them, so i'm forced to refresh the page.

Yes, those intrusive ads are absolutely annoying! They can actually put people off WP. They are preventing people from browsing WP.

If you use Mozilla as a browser, google Ghostery for Mozilla, with Ghostery you can stop all the very many trackers sites like to put on your computer without your consent.
An additional bonus is that with Ghostery, I get no adverts whatsoever here on WP, I used to wonder what these adverts were that people complained about until I reinstalled Mozilla Firefox without Ghostery.

Think it might be Adobe Flash, i turned on "clicked to play" for plugins in Chrome and the problem seems to have vanished.

Yeah, i know about that, but i don't want to interfere with the 'non-intrusive' adverts as it makes money for the website. Plus i hate all kinds of addons. Anyway, i found a workaround, see my post above this one.
