What is up with all of the necrobumping on this site? I don't think an OP from 1-8 years ago is still eagerly awaiting responses. I'm sure a fair bit of it comes from people not noticing just how old a thread is before posting in it, but why are there no rules regarding it (even loose ones)?

If I am bored/lonely in the middle of the night and see a topic that interests me what is the harm in my commenting, even if it is a few years old? Isn't that the reason for this site?

My guess is that the site software is encouraging people to read old threads by providing the links to them at the bottom of other threads' pages. I think that since the upgrade necroposting has increased. I tend to respond to already-necroed threads if the topic itself is relevant/interesting, regardless of the OP's situation.

I think there is a loose rules about necroing. Some necroed threads used to be locked before. But I haven't seen such threads being locked recently.

Some old threads are...well...more PERTINENT than some new threads.

I think the "similar topics" thing at the bottom of most threads unintentionally encourages necroposting. Not that I necessarily have a problem with necroposting, but it just seems kind of odd, considering how widely discouraged it is on other forums.

if the thread is relevant I don't see see any problem with it.

This forum hardly has any rules. For example almost noone seems to remember the rule of using the search option before starting a topic. Almost everyday I see a few new topics that are basically the same as a topic I seen a few days before.

It may just have to do with the browser addons I have installed, but I could never get the search function on here to work for me.

I think the search function on WP is basically a Google search with site:wrongplanet.net or something like that. I think you will get the same results if you go to Google, then enter your search term and at the end put "site:wrongplanet.net" (without the quote marks), which forces Google to only search for things on WP.

I'll have to try that. I knew about the "site:" feature for a long time, but I never thought to use it on WP. Of course, I wish WP had an internal search feature like some of the other forums I use, since Google tends to miss things and repeat the same results. As well, an internal search tool would make it easier to search for threads by author, subforum, etc.

I think WP having its own search engine is fairly server-intensive and problem-prone. Many websites just use google, let them sort it out. One thing about Google and Youtube and similar sites is that they seem to fiddle with the results based on your past browsing history. Same with the adds, I posted in a thread about the Middle-east and suddenly the adds here changed to a dating site for "Muslim women" and an add in Arabic which I couldn't read :D

I think the reason why people are hating it, so much (and I do mean HATE), is because they aren't in the habit of noticing the date of threads, yet, and they're responding to people who probably haven't been here, for years, and it makes them feel like an idiot.

I understand if the topic is still relevant----but, why can't people start a NEW thread? Right now, one person, in particular, has brought-up about 5 or 6 or 7 old threads, in the last few days, and it's quite annoying, because people are quoting people that haven't been here, for ages----and then, of course, when one quotes someone, they hope for a response / conversation! I'm just waiting for the day that "I" don't notice, and respond to someone that hasn't been here, in years, and I am NOT gonna be happy about it.

Our Great Leader has spoken.

I agree; some of the older topics are relevant and are quite interesting too.

I just lost it
I screamed and thrashed around and bashed every one in striking distance!
I lashed out and hurt everyone I could
