Why such a a short edit expiration?

I don't really understand why you only have about 10 minutes to edit a post. It does make sense for replies, but at least for original posts in new topics it can be a useful thing to be able to edit any time.

We have 30 minutes. That is ample time. It is not likely to change. Deal with it.

Also, now that I have quoted your original post, we have a permanent record of what you originally intended to say. So even if you deleted everything from your original post, people could still read it and respond to it, and nothing you could do would ever change that.

Okay, that's not why I'd change a post. I'd only care about fixing typos...
