get "about:blank" on older iphone, but signed on in new page

I attempt to sign in with my username and password on an older iphone. And for the address of the web page, I simply get

about:blank

And it just hangs there. And I think the log in has failed.

But then if I close that page and open a new window, I'm signed in.
