Yes the pop up adds that play obnoxious commercials...except you can't see it anywhere on the page to exit or mute it. Though audio pop up adds that force obnoxious sound upon you probably shouldn't be part of a website like this even if they are visible to mute and exit.

I will try and look that up...did put an ad blocker on, but doesn't seem to be working, not that exact one though.

I use Firefox so it would be in tools ----> ad ons ----> Adblock Plus and the NoScript

I hate Chrome, I dislike Google and the browser. IE you obviously don't want to use.

No Script has a bit of a learning curve, you kind of have to be intuitive about what scripts to allow but it's usually not too hard. The url being the obvious one and any other scripts you might need on the page. I've been trying to get my parents to use this for years but it's still a work in progress to say the least.

almost never see ads and definitely not the invasive kind

Usually they are invisible first but show later, but I found an easy way to get rid of them.
When you are on WP you click right mouse button.
A little square appears with different options and you choose:
- view page-info.
You click it and another square with different options appears and you choose:
- permission (or authorization, I don't know how it displays at an English-language setting).
Then "activating plug-ins" appears and you deny permission for Adobe Flash.
That way you cannot watch videos posted on WP, but in that case you just turn Adobe Flash back on.
But I do not watch so many videos on here.
It does not influence other websites with videos displayed like YouTube, only WP.
Auditory rest is granted.

What browser are you using? Ideally people wouldn't be us Adblock as advertising is what allows this site to exist.

So it's in my best interest (and Wrong Planet's best interest) to make sure there aren't obnoxious ads that drive members to install Adblock.

I never used ad blocking extensions until the thing started with self-playing video ads. I use Chrome, but this is a problem in all browsers.

On WP, I would load a page, then begin reading and suddenly a soundtrack would start playing and then I would have to scroll around to find the little video ad and turn it off. This would sort of shatter my focus.

The same thing would happen on ABC news, but it was worse because those pages would have a video that would load and play then the ad would start playing over that. Terrible cacophony.

I don't mind ads, and kind of like the way they are targeted to me (e.g., adds for lock laces on sale through Amazon, because I buy lock laces.) but I can't tolerate ads that play sound. I now use the AdBlock extension in Chrome, because those video/sound ads were driving me mad.

I understand that the same kind of issue was behind Apple's decision to enable ad blocking in Safari in iOS. The Ad creators got too pushy and have created a monster that had to be controlled, now at huge cost to every site that relies on ad revenue. I don't mind ads at all, if they are not assaulting my hearing, but I just can't take it when there is autoplaying audio.

Somebody should make an app that allows sites to get their ad hit or whatever but doesn't show it to the user, everybody wins except the advertiser but they'd be none the wiser and would have to invent new ways to quantify it. Wish I was smart enough to make it.
