Why is it no longer possible to Edit posts after a certain period of time?

I noticed a grammatical error in one of my posts that phrased the entire post differently from how I had intended. Of course, when I noticed this later on and went to click on the Edit button, it was gone... So strange, especially considering the nature of this Forums posters.

When people have an unlimited edit window, some will play strange games like editing a post after others have replied to it to make the replies look foolish or deranged.

It's better just to let it be and live with the occasional annoying typo.

Silly people are going to be silly no matter what.

I'd rather be able to freely Edit my posts, than restrict their antics.

^ The time allowed for editing has been increased significantly of late. I managed to edit a post about three hours after I made it yesterday. A couple of months ago I'd have had no more than 25 minutes to do so.

The current time allowed to edit a post is FIVE WHOLE HOURS!

If you can't figure out what you want to say within 300 minutes, then maybe you should reconsider posting anything at all.

The better tactic is to know exactly what you want to say before clicking on the "Quote" or "Post Reply" buttons.

I think this is right. Preview and proof is the way to go.

Of course, Idealist, you can always petition Alex to change this parameter for you, if you want to. I think the odds of that happening are infinitesimal, but if you are extremely optimistic, why not give it a try?

I'm a QUALITY OVER QUANTITY type of poster, I like to have the option to come back to a Post and find new ways to improve upon it.



I'm pretty sure that the system doesn't work that way, i.e. it's an all or nothing type thing. He couldn't "change this parameter" for me, without changing it for everyone else.

True quality is built in, not added on.

I agree, but then again, I view posts as living works that grow over time, not static works that once created, can never be changed again.

Simple solution #2: After the edit time has expired, quote your original post, and then start a new post in the same three withe the words, "What I really meant to say was ...".

Time to induce a paradigm shift or resign yourself to frustration and unhappiness, then.

Replies can look even more foolish or deranged if a moderator removes the post they were replying to, leaving no trace it was once there. Quoting the post is prolly a good idea in either case.

Posts are part of a conversation, it's the conversation that should grow rather than individual posts. It's inappropriate, to the other participants, for someone to modify their comments after they have responded.

Either use the preview or check after posting to make sure you are happy with the content. I think the original 30 minute edit window was plenty of time to proofread.

I often edit my post a couple times after I post it, even after using the preview button. This is partly because I am dyslexic and English isn't my main language. However I also understand that you need to have restrictions to stop idiot spammers, keep topics clean and chronological.

I don't really mind a short period but like to be able to edit my post shortly after posting it.

My point is that for some people like me it takes some extra effort to post.
