Usually the staff picks someone they have come to know, who is regularly active throughout the forum. Also there's possibly an application process in the administration section.

Just wanting to help should be enough, but unfortunately most forums have a history of a moderator or two who turned out to be totally the wrong person for the job.

There's a funny rule pertaining to becoming a Moderator.

One should never "volunteer" for the job.

It's like the old days, when a President never campaigned for himself.

Why would one want that liability?

Because vashakiran upset me. I have the strong feeling they don't belong here so they should be removed. It's the same like with correcting clothes on hangers when I'm in the shop (does anyone else do that?) :-P if staff is not available to do that, I will.

Nothing wrong with volunteering. I think it's cool. Lots of work and aggravation. I did it once but found it too much of a nuisance.

To paraphrase Douglas Adams ...

"Anyone who desires the job of Moderator should on no account be allowed to do the job."

Were I the owner of this or any other website, I would immediately be suspicious of anyone who actually wants to be a moderator.

Even if I hand-picked my own moderatorial team, there would always be the risk that some hidden racism or sexism might manifest itself once a moderator has had a taste of power.

Removing spam is more of an administrative task than being a moderator. It sounds like the OP is just volunteering to help keep the forum spam-free, not necessarily to moderate discussions.

Only mildly OT, but I "front and face" grocery store shelves without even realizing I'm doing it, especially when I've taken an item from that section.

That is a very good answer :-) and how come I didn't come up with front facing myself?! Although I run with misplaced item (probably abandoned by undecided customer) across the store a couple of times to put it where it belongs. I once (it was 'before autism') read a psychologist interpreted similar behaviour as a sign of low self esteem (because it's doing someone else's job) and I tried to stop. I couldn't fall asleep later, worrying about those poor tomatoes placed between bags of rice! :-P

i'd say spam removal is more janitorial than administrative...

i've deleted 'em. :)

i've always been dubious of the guideline of automatically disregarding anyone who volunteers to be a moderator, or otherwise suggests their willingness for the position. i feel like we overlook a lot of great people that way.

still, i feel it is there for a reason.

we have a couple of mods who aren't active right now, i'd actually say we have all the help we need, but alex (or the other mods) may feel differently.

...When did that Prexy rule apply ? BTW , did you ever hear of one where the Fiirst Lady ~ I guess?? it was specifically the First Lady  ~ was not suppose to specifically campaign for her hubby ?
This leading to the like , IIRC , of a magazine article credited to Mamie Eisenhower titled " Vote For My Husband , or for Adlai Stevenson , But Please Vote " ! I remember reading that this was the case . :P

Until the mid-19th Century, it was well-known that a Presidential candidate should not campaign for his (or her) self. It would have been considered a major faux pas. Even saying that he desires the nomination of his party was frowned upon as well.

When directly asked, a candidate always demurred, making mention of the delights of private life, and making light of his qualifications for the job of President.
