Title says it all. By the time Alex finally switched to a server that works, it was too late. Most of the user base had given up by then and doesn't look like they're coming back. It's sad and disappointing.

I know what you mean. Even now there seem to be some significant matters that still need attention - some people are probably still locked out of the site due to the https issue, plus there seem to be logging in problems in certain circumstances.

It's also the case that whereas some of the forums have a respectable level of activity at times, they have a pretty thin user base, eg in Off The Wall maybe 90% of the posts are made by the same half dozen or so people. A similar thing applies to certain other sections as well.

I'm not quite as pessimistic as you though. If reliable access to the site can be maintained on a 24 hour basis, and those other stumbling blocks can be tackled (a big 'if', admittedly), I'd like to think the site can stabilize and reassert itself.

I think the https thing is a biggie.

Let's hope it's near the top of Alex's 'to do' list.....

If it's not too late to do something, just wait till it is.

This place is not nearly as active as when I joined almost five years ago but it is far from dead.

A shrinking active user base is bad for Alex and advertisers here but not necessarily bad for users. If you have executive functioning time planning and multitasking issues or are just a bit too addicted to WP less activity is probably a good thing. Losing valueble contributors and valuable posts out of frustration is obviously a bad thing.

Wherther due to lack attention, lack of understand of how bad it was getting or lack of finances the server issue was allowed to fester for a number of years. Hopefully the other problems can be solved on a more timely basis.

Dead was an overstatement. But I believe it's past the point of no return. It will likely wind up as a small group of diehards struggling to keep discussions going.

This is easily the most active forum I’ve ever been a part of. Calling it dead or inactive is ridiculous. I think it will be around for a long time.

I feel making new users feel welcome, without overdoing it, will provide an assist in keeping this an active and viable forum.

You don't seem to be on here much, so could be you don't see things the same way as someone who's on here considerably more.

WrongPlanet was never "dead", just off-line for a short while.

So ... how is it going with YOUR website? :P

Anyone who left was either banned or they were about to be. No loss at all.

WP will get more users now...provided all that 520 or whatever crap is dispensed with forever.

All of the people I've known to have given up on the place over the chronic server errors that went on forever, don't match that description at all. You actually come closer to it reputation wise, but not them.

Ooo ... a thinly-veiled insult! How totally impressive!

 ... not ...
