I have started threads to which there have been no replies, at least for quite a while. While the original poster of a thread can bump it, they can't bump it again until it contains another post. This can be frustrating for threads with no replies after all this time. I was thinking of allowing threads with no replies to be bumped more times or even automatic bumping of such threads so they are more likely to be seen by those who might want to reply.

Perhaps there is a reason why there are no replies.

I have once seen a thread asking for help that had fallen down to the bottom of the “new post” list and bumped it by posting

(thread bump)

I didn’t feel I had anything of use to the OP, but thought I’d shuffle it back to the top on the off chance that someone else who did had logged in recently.

If someone asking for help has been lost then a kind bump probably does more good than harm.

In general, though, threads don’t get completely unseen. If people didn’t reply to your thread before you bumped it then they won’t after you bump it. I know it is frustrating when you don’t get any replies but there’s no guarantee people will be interested in your threads.

For people to be interested in one's threads, those threads must first be interesting.

I’ve been ignored many times.

My solution is to “try harder.”

They were not interesting enough so that those particular people reading your post at that particular time did not want to make the effort to reply.

Even Phil Collins has this problem sometimes.

Maybe that's because those who would like to reply haven't seen it yet.

Isn't that why bumping the topic is an option in the first place.

Surely a thread is more likely to get a reply if it is bumped, isn't that why there is a button to bump topics?

There isn’t a button to bump topics unless there’s a secret WrongPlanet feature. There is the option to reply - but you shouldn’t usually do that unless you actually have something to say.

There is.
In topics where you are the OP, it is on the blue bar above the OP:

Subscribe topic | Bookmark topic | E-mail friend | Bump topic

One time, I attempted to create a tribute thread upon the passing away of Muhammad Ali.

I received 3 replies. And I was a well-known member when I started the thread.

I don’t receive many replies when I start threads.

A good thing to do is to reply to other threads.

If it was easy for everyone to see the obvious, then Myrtonos would not have started this thread.

Sometimes threads are read and appreciated but no relevant reply comes to mind. I know this because people who have never responded to my threads or posts on occasion mention that they have read and valued them much later. I really like some posts and threads, learn from them but feel I have nothing of value to contribute.

... and sometimes when threads are read the only relevant replies would earn someone a warning or a perma-ban.
