I don't think anyone in this thread is trying to pick on you/humiliate you, you don't need to feel embarrassed :). The other person (Ferris) was jokingly asking to be a mod I believe since Alex showed up.

Should be interesting to see who the new mods are.

Kraftie wasn't joking about being a mod though.

I usually 'get' unwritten rules on social media and forums, but this one I have never heard of. Maybe it's an American thing?

That's true about Kraftie. I don't want to speak for Kraftie, but I think his unease isn't about you specifically. More general in relation to the MOD selecting process maybe since it is the hands of a few, just one actually Alex.

I think the idea behind the rule is 'all those that seek power do not deserve it on the internet'. This obviously isn't true for everyone, but I think its meant to weed out ill intentioned folks that would abuse mod power.

Ban anyone who gets in your way.

Just a hidden rule here. I was here long enough to see Alex himself say it.

Reeeeeally?

Pepe would like to be a mod.

Not anymore, since all the current candidates volunteered for the position

I was not picking on you. I was making a joke when I told you the good news because you said you wouldn't make a good mod and why.

Now you don't have to ever worry about being recommended as one to Alex.

Sorry, I have a sense of humor here. It's never my intention to pick on someone when I make a joke.

I'm sorry I misinterpreted. I thought I had made an embarrassing social error by not following some unwritten rule that I was unaware of. A bit like the unwritten rule of liking your own posts on Facebook, or quoting your own quote and replying to yourself on WP.
I think I just misinterpreted how you worded your post, but don't worry, all is forgiven. I think I should read things more carefully before getting all sensitive.

As long as our new moderators continue the current tradition of trying to keep things relatively neutral (at least as far as is possible) in areas like news and PPR, and don't favour one side or the other, this sounds like good news.

And I second Pepe's nomination...Having the site's resident skunk as moderator could work well - people would sense him lurking and be on their best behaviour :)

So...Do we have a "hall monitor" position available for Pepe?

I am glad this long overdue process is underway. I think it is likely that in a year or two WP will be a noticeably better place and a year after that even better as the new mods will have learned how to be a mod. Those WP members still here have shown patience. We just need to show more until things straighten out.

There should be a position of “troll-buster” who might or might not be a Mod. I mean in the computer-savvy sense. One who could spot an Internet troll a mile away.

I believe it might be good if Mods we’re voted in by the membership....but the process might cause problems, too,

Probably best if they are selected by existing moderators, I would have thought... Less "opportunity" to add weight to the scales in favour of one side or another and more chance that some "impartial" (as much as possible) judgements on potential applicants based on past\present actions\behaviour would take place - A moderator SHOULD be neutral in any conflict, not seen by either party as having an obvious bias against them.

They would need mod tools to verify suspicions or at least a mod that can be bothered to use them. People making valid reports about sock-puppets have been ignored or even accused of being "paranoid" in the past so they stopped doing it.

There aren't any conservative mods, atm.
The left-wing bias is one of the major problems here.
And we need more maturity, but I think the die has already been cast.

Bias isn't an issue if the person with it can recognise their natural bias and account for it in their decision making. It is an issue when the person with it is unaware (or worse still, while being aware of it, ignores it) and allows it to affect their judgement, though, and I have come across moderators in the past like that...It never ended well for the site involved.
