Who wants the avatar size to be doubled, so it's at a size, not too big, yet not too small?

I do.

Just a suggestion.

I think the physical size if fine, however I think the allowed FILE size should be given a bump up. I use PNGs for my Avvies for minimum file size, and they won't fit under WP regulations (even when in 140x140 pixels), which kinda doesn't make sense, as JPEGs to me look a bit ugly sometimes.

You can often decrease the files size without loosing quality. There has to be a limit to the file size, it has to be stored.

GIMP is a good image manipulation program

I think you could double the size of your current avatar and be okay, Alternative :P

I voted "Nay" because it wasn't clear enough whether you meant dimensions of file size.

I actually have a slightly masochistic liking for the current size, although I'd be happier if it was clearer which of the several possible interpretations of the size might be --- It's quoted as "no more than 16 KB" at the moment, which should mean 16,000 bytes is allowed but 16,001 is not. I haven't checked if that's precisely what it means (if it meant 16,384, it should say "16 KiB). Also, at one point in the past, I know it said something obscure, like 15,938 or 16,176, which did at least avoid the slight ambiguity of "KB".

The reason I quite like the current size is that it is enough for just under 8 bits per pixel. This means that images can be photo quality, provided you compress at least a bit.

It also stops people (like me  ) uploading complex animations.

(PS. It helps if you use Linux, and have all the tools to hand to prepare utterly any format of image file with control over compression levels, etc. :) )

Lau, I think I meant both.

Although what peopl have posted File Size is more of a request than screen/avatar size.

Nooo... I feel that increasing the dimensions of the avatar would be silly. It's already a big on the large size, to my mind. I tried to keep my usage of it down, but it rapidly grew to fill the sapce available, almost. 128x120 isn't that far off the max.

My XFace avatar for email (top right of this avatar) is recognisable, and that's a 48x48 black and white (no grey), which encrypts as 160 characters:
X-Face: Oz~LmP+8!fNS2IQ_L'"ABE#Lo}[oRE9v!xg\#7?Gg{I'|1?j)QBW1w|3WHhAIvYiI.\G0kN
f)^Z7=*iVY8>0WMV>*@Aa>'<TDY7-{ugC$(X*z\e8u7!o)CquEPo8]v1_{sETrE1bGTc25[z"#n?#

Maybe pushing the file size up to 32K wouldn't be a totally bad idea... but I'm still not convinced. WP isn't about fancy avatars.

Indeed. Fancy ones are more likely
to move. Something a number of
us have problems with.

Just remember though - there's
always the escape button.

I just block all animated avatars (AdBlock Plus), as I did with Alternative's one. All animations distract me. The escape key is OK, but you have to hit it every time.

Yeah, I don't have adblock on my work machine.
Ought to see if I can install it, without admin
privileges.

Too lazy, I guess.
