I've been noticing the constant notifications for monetary support.

Couldn't we have a campaign drive like the non traditional radio stations do?

Meaning, if every active member would pledge a small amount, it would likely add up to a pretty decent amount. I'm talking really small donations, like $5.00 to begin with, and see how that goes. Of course people could always give more than that. But if we start off with a tiny amount, that wouldn't be tempting to procrastinate about, the campaign could be run once a year, or every six months. That way, I wouldn't have to feel guilty every time I log onto WP. :)

To be honest, when I listen to my local NPR radion station, and they start asking for money, I usually find that, in my situation, even their lowest donation is beyond my means. So, I generally put off making a donation until "later." And of course that never happens.

What do you guys think? :nerdy: :sunny:

"Urgent: We need your help. WP's advertising campaign is costing more than $50 a day!"

Well,... ...let's see. $50(365 days) = $18,250/year

$18,250 / 10,000 members = $1.83 per member per year.

Add to that operational costs of about $300.00 per month, or $3,600.00/ year / 10,000 members = $0.36 per member per year

.... so $5.00 per member per year should cover everything, figuring on ~ 5,000 active members (throwing in some extra for growth).

Or roughly 42 cents a month - a deal! A little more than the cost of one US mail stamp, and less than the cost of one soft drink per month. And you don't even have to go door to door! :D

There are lots of things this site could do, which I have suggested several times. Offering paid "premium" memberships that have some perks, setting up a bookstore here that links to amazon so that WP gets a cut of the sale.

I belong to another board that offers premium memberships and basically the person's name is in a different color to indicate their support, and they have access to a blog section that is off limits to other members. People who don't pay still have full access to the board.

That board also has a small "ebay" type trading post where members can trade/ sell to each other, and the board takes a small portion of the sale.

But I think alex would have to do some serious upgrades before anything like that would be possible. More than a year ago he said the board would be transferred to a vBulletin format.

there's a link at the top of the forums.

I can give people a "supporting member" tag if they send me a PM requesting it after they donate.

Very good idea, Hartz. Now that I spend more time on here than watching TV I could send what I'm saving on the cost of cable.

It is a very good idea anything to keep this website going there must be other ways to raise money proberly out the question but what about a partner someone that be willing to put money into the upkeep of this website,

If not then just get people to donate if they can or if they'd be willing to,

Now you can also get the WP Supporter button under your name if you donate:

Thanks for breaking it down, Chuck! My math/calculating skills are zilch.

But one also has to consider that some members do not have the means to donate overseas. I do not have a credit card, for example, for a variety of reasons (ID theft, overspending, lack of understanding of the process of a credit card). I also would not trust mailing a cheque through post all the way from Australia to America.

I don't have a 'credit card' but I can definately use a 'debit card' that gives me access to my funds in the bank and when they are gone, it doesn't draw any more. I would be very surprised if they didn't have those down under.

Can we use debit cards for PayPal?

yeah. you can basically use a debit card / credit card interchangeably.
