tecnical question about the advertisements

I'm freaking out right now. How does the advertisement to my left know where I went to highschool? It's an add for classmates.com , and it's scrolling by a list of schools in my area. How does it know where I live? Is it somehow connected to my WrongPlanet account so it can read what I put for my location? Did I enter my zip code into my browser or something and forget about it?

HOLY CRUD! Now there's an advertisement for the bank I use. It must know my bank statements too. Time to move out of state and change my name again.

But seriously: How do the advertisements know what district I'm in?

Your IP Address. Pinpoints your approximate location (in terms of current internet usage location). This is how IP Bans can accidentally ban other members who are in the same region.

But seriously: How do the advertisements know what district I'm in?

this is not a problem... it uses your IP address to try to make an approximate triangulation of your location, usually triangulates the gateway that you use (thats the smaller computer that the cable company connects you to in your district) hence its saying schools in your area...

these ads are nothing to worry about... very harmless...

To add balance though, there should also be ads for Diarrheze.
