Why does it say the words Emu Egg above my avatar? I did not put that there. What's going on here?

It's a sort of ranking. The little rank title will increase in status (or... bird size) the more posts you make. Up next is the controversial Tufted Titmouse, and then it's Hummingbird, and it gets bigger from there. The final ranks are Velociraptor (going off the theory that dinosaurs evolved into birds) and Phoenix. Once you hit 1,000 posts, you can make your own custom title!
