I'm not sure if you already discussed about it, but didn't found a thread, if there is one, sorry for doubles.

This website is called 'The online resource an community for those with Asperger's Syndrom'.
But what is with people with Kanner's, with High-Functioning Autism? Aren't they welcome?

I'm asking this because our German Website Aspies.de has a discussion about the naming for a long time. It's called 'Menschen mit Asperger Syndrom' (people with Asperger's Syndrome), and many complain that they haven't the diagnosis Asperger's but HF.

There is also a discussion if the association Aspies e.V. only speaks for those at the one site of the Spektrum or also for those who are instutionalized. Frank Klein, an high-functioning author I appreciate much (I can't post his site it's called 'Autistic Advocacy'*), says that what he says (don't fight the autism, fight the barriers which come with it) applies also for LF-people. They don't like to change in normal people and get their personality deleted, too. But some from Aspies.de say that these 'other autistics' are different ones and that they don't feel like being able to speak for their needs.

What do you think about that?

*by the way: does somebody know him or his email adress? I'd like to translate some of his texts and publish them on Aspies.de, of course under his name. But I can't ask him for permission as I don't have a possibility to contact him)

Hi :)

This community is for all individuals who would benefit from being a part of it, whether they are on the spectrum, know someone on the spectrum, or are just curious. The main focus is on AS, but the first sentence on the home page states:

"Wrong Planet is the web community designed for individuals (and parents of those) with Asperger's Syndrome, Autism, ADHD, and other PDDs."

I hope that helps!

One of my kids is Aspie and the other is HFA.

I'm not going to put all my resources into TWO sites. So I'm definitely happy to hear from other people - particularly HFA.

What about the self-diagnosed?

Even NT's are welcome here as long as they are respectful.

Do you think the use of the adjective 'even' would be considered respectful in this context?

There are a number of ways in which that sentence could be interpreted. Is it respectful to assume the least charitable option?

Madlen,
this forum is definitely not aspie only-am LFA,and often see it stated by other users that aspies or hfas are the only WPers who exist--- will find the majority of WPers are aspie so are who WP is especially designed for,but will find a force of non aspie WPers who are also on the spectrum or neurodiverse,to name a few regulars am know of- Age, Strapples, Anbuend, Wsmac, Danielismyname [has dual aut/as dx],Zendell,ebec--will find the others am have mentioned vary from severe PDDNOS to different levels of classic autism to ADHD.

There are times when some aspie WPers denie the existance of LFAers and MFAers here, and judge am and others very badly or judge as general groups, using very outdated stereotypes, whilst expecting everyone to conform to AS awareness.
Will find them minority as most WPers are accepting, stay around for a while and see what think,it's a great forum whatever form of autism, whatever functioning level, whatever neurological condition...etc do have,NTs are welcome here to,as there are many here, but they usually have some sort of connection to autism or as.

There's a number of ways to interpret every sentence I write, or is there? That way, I can be like a politician.

That's a good question and good point.
In my view, it isn't the best assumption to make, lots of people I have seen and observe, asume things or judge based on first appearance or just appereance, without wondering or trying to see beyond the surface, which I find pretty sad, when the first assumption is a negative one. And then, problems start from there. Wether it is in real life or online. And I admit that I have been like that sometimes, but I know it isn't the best thing.

As an example, many parents of Aspie kids come here to learn more about their child(ren). More often than not they also find that they themselves have AS.

Wasn't it Tony Attwood who said the difference between Aspergers Syndrome and High Functioning Autism was just spelling? I have him on DVD saying that...

Well, if you've got him on DVD saying that, then I guess it was him.

The difference between AS and HFA is a language delay which could manifest itself as speech, spelling, reading etc.

So... What is the difference between HFA and Aspergers with the Learning Difficulties Comorbid?

Most of the definitions sit too close to each other and none are absolutely perfect - or even testable via simple blood test. They all rely on subjective criteria.

The number of people "mis-diagnosed" with one condition over another would be astronomical. Assuming, of course, that there really isn't just one condition which "appears" different depending on how you look at it and how it "sits" with the individual.
