How could this have happened?

I posted a picture in my post a random image thread. I think it had been a cat. (probably). anyway, a really kind member here noticed the image had changed into pornography and told me. I got it changed but my question is, how could this have happened when I have never been to that website before, and the website doesn't even show up on this computer as being gone to? and no. no one has my password.

Did you hot link the picture? If so then they can change it any time, and might do it as a response to hot linking to embarrass you from doing it.

Interestingly I posted a thread about this very subject several months ago, so when I saw your post I immediately guessed what had happened... It was in this forum... I'll have a look to see if I can find it.

I've never been to the website mentioned.

You might not have hit one of their pages but you used an image of theirs. Either that or somebody has access to your account, and edited you post. Do you have any siblings? Aslo is your password guesable?


Unless you are hosting the image yourself you can't control what happens to it.

The problem can happen when one website links to an image found on another website which is itself linking to the image from elsewhere. Everyone is pointing to the original image on the original website even though they copied the link from different websites. In practice this means it is difficult to be sure an image can be "trusted" even if it is picked up from a "legitimate" site or someone's blog.

Perhaps the only thing to do is follow the link back to the site that is actually hosting the image to see if that looks trustworthy, before posting it? However, when the url is just a short url or goes to an image hosting site such as photobucket then it is anybody's guess how trustworthy the owner of an image is.

Ah, yes, but i've also never seen the link. I check every link I post before I post it. I find it enjoyable to see what it says. and I've never seen that one. I'm also not at home, and no one has my password, and it's not guessable---I even changed it recently.

Look, the most likely explanation is that the website owner had bandwidth issues due to people linking back to his images, and redirected the link to the nasty one. Believe me, I had to clean up a couple of images where that has occurred. *Shudder*

I had that happen on another site which was very embarrassing, but it happens all the time on different forum sites.

Yikes! I will think twice before posting pictures again.

Its safer to download the picture then upload it to photo bucket, that way the website can't play the old switch a roo on you.
