<---- Why is my avatar so lousy (and this isn't a rhetorical question). I had a very nice picture, and once I brought it down to 16k in photoshop, this is what it looks like. How is it that everyone else has such nice avatars?

You may try to take the original picture down to a size that is larger than your current avatar, but sacrificing some of the quality so the byte count stays low. Try different combinations of sizes and byte counts until you find what you look for.

Nope, tried it. The only way I could get to 16k was to reduce the picture to lowest fidelity and small. Arg!

thats a little small, you should go to photo bucket and upload your picture there, then resize it there for a proper avatar, I think most members here use the site for that
photobucket.com

Covert the files to GIF format (yes, you can make them small enough in Photoshop).

How does one change the words underneath the nickname and above the avatar?

I use low-grade images to begin with, then crop them for only the portions I'm interested in, and then scale them with Ms Paint if needed.

Works every time! :)

You can't until you've reached 1000 posts. Until then you're stuck with the rank in accordance with your number of posts.
