WP is unusable tonight!

It has taken me an hour to log onto on WP and read one post on one forum!

If WP goes any slower it will be going backwards and people will be logging off then making unposts and uncomments about existing posts and threads will get shorter until the users finally log on and then open their browser.

Yeah I know.

Another member made a thread about that and I was going to make one in the WP Discussion.

It's been very slow with me too. It took me like five minutes just from clicking on reply to get here to type this.

It's normally like this when there are 500 or more people on.

It is nothing to do with an internet service provider, which is what you use to access the internet.

I have also explained that a more powerful server won't in itself solve the problem, and it not fair on those donating money towards such a white elephant. It is an exercise in chasing your tail.

The problem lies in the fact that is site is sitting on data that goes back to 2004 which slows everything down but rarely queried. It is also down to the inefficiency of the code. There are so many things that could be done, it is literally countless. You can get really creative with it. By just an example if you turned of BBcode parsing in peak areas the speed will sky rocket. If users could cold choose text only like on other forums then they might be less frustrated, you might have noticed that feed are not as slowed down for this reason. But he main thing is they need to dump or archive some of the data.

I have given up trying to convince alex of this, it has fallen on deaf ears.

I am experienced in this area and written extensions for forum software so I know what I am talking about.

I've got a better idea. Make my own forum with those features and more. Already on it.

Good luck getting any decent number of WP members to move there. Break-off forums have been created before, and they haven't managed to gain very large or active memberships.

One suggestion that would speed things up but not need a lot of code:

Add a dropdown menu to link directly to each forum. I think a lot of people maybe step from one forum to the next and this takes two steps rather than one since you have to go via the forum index page. I know I could create my own bookmarks to each forum, but a central one would be better and could be used by everyone.

If I'm in the computers forum, at peak load it sometime takes five minutes to get to the index page then another five minutes to get into the next forum; assuming they even open and I don't get the "Very Busy" page.
