I joined a co-ed frat in college. I was assigned a "Big brother" through the pledge process to help me along, and everyone was really supportive. I had a group of friends that I otherwise wouldn't have had, and got to go out places with a group of people I was comfortable with. There wasn't a bunch of "Wild parties", we did things like volunteer to take local kids (Who's parents were busy) trick-or-treating, or all go to the beach together when it was nice. We were required to keep a certain GPA to stay in the frat, and if it slipped we were assigned a study partner. We were also considered a "dry" frat...No alcohol was allowed at any of our functions, and we were not permitted to be seen drinking while wearing our letters. We did more community service than anything else.

Frats aren't always what a lot of people think, and they can greatly improve your college experience.

Personally, I don't agree with the use of alcoholic beverages to enhance social situations. I don't drink of course, and so this is merely 100% my opinion.

I would say that most of my peers in college do not agree with the opinion stated above.

As to the question- Whatever option pays you the most.

Oh FFS, your just against them out of spite and jealousy, as opposed actual principle. Maybe the rest of college doesnt agree with your opinion because it is perhaps wrong. Perhaps you should drink and have a good time, as opposed to leading a life based an a flawed set of principles.

I will not participate in internet trolling over differences in opinions.

Neither side is right or wrong, because the choice to do so is merely ones opinion. There is no universal right or wrong answer.

Because I do not drink does not mean I am jealous of people who do drink. And because people do drink does not mean they are inferior to those who don't. Everything is not so one-dimensional, and things aren't so black and white.

But I guess there really isn't any point in continuing this discussion any further.

And because a person belongs to a fraternity or sorority, it does not mean they drink and party. My sister and I both belonged to "Dry" houses.

Even the ones that aren't dry, drinking is not always a requirement. (Yes, in some social fraternities that is the case, where "failing" to drink is frowned upon. Not all!) If alcohol is served at an event in the fraternity I was in, alternatives were also provided. Such as soda, or juice. The focus is not the drinking, it is on the interacting with the other brothers.

Without having that opportunity, in which people not only accepted but welcomed me despite my difficulties, I would be a lot more behind socially. It wasn't the alcohol that allowed that, it was the environment.

In Frats, you buy friends. Friends you may be better off without. Also, they are about enforcing conformity, and losing you identity to be part of the "group." I don't know how this could go well for someone with AS...-IMO

QFT!

I agree.

I couldn't have said it any better myself.

To those who said no then you are anti-social. I am still thinking about it and I have been two parties for AEPI and they were fun.

How clever, dismissing someone as an internet troll because they have scored some points on you...

Just go for it. In the worse case scenario you can always leave.

Haha, I merely declared you as an internet troll because you refuse to realize that other people have different opinions than your own and you are not always right.

You even say that "You scored points on me." Do you even realize how immature you are being?

To continue the conversation would be like arguing against an eight year old. Therefore, I declared the continuation pointless.

You seem to be taking pleasure in responding to him. That's something a troll usually does. Just FYI.

You already stated that you do not think highly of people in fraternities or sororities. You haven't really given any reasons. You've also stated that you don't consider people that drink to be in any way better to those that don't, and that the same goes for non-drinkers not being better than drinkers. That being said...do you have any reasons for not giving anyone in a fraternity or a sorority a fair shot?

There is a difference between fact and opinion. I have sat on both sides of the fence of the frat/no frat arguement, where as you have only sat on one. You seem to have a refusal to look over the fence. Instead you sit there berating people who have made that jump, simply because you are too cowardly to take a peek yourself. Seems you are the one who needs to do some growing up. Oh, make sure you take a good look at the emoticon I left at the end of my sentence, do you think i left it there just as a random gesture? Or actually because it has meaning...?

We weren't even talking about the OP's topic.

He already made up his mind: Its good that he made his own decision and is joining the fraternity.

I'll be 20 years old in college and still havent made any true friends or niche yet. I think I have asperger's syndrome since i fit alot of the desriptions for it, especially since i'm shy and awkward. i have almost no social life

we just finished the initiation process, so im officially a brother, and i still dont feel like i made the right choice and strongly considering quitting. If i dont join this fraternity, I'll be almost friendless. when i say i dont 'clique' with them, i mean our personalities and interests dont match at all. most of the time, i have no interest in joining thier conversations since they talk about stuff i dont care about

i dont know if those guys are my right friends either, but being with them should certainly help me overcome my shyness/awkwardness. i dont know whether to force myself to be social, or to play it safe, and only be friends with fellow socially awkward people.

this fraternity is not your stereotypcial fraternity. the guys dont party much, no hazing, some of the brothers rarely drink, and its known for having a strong brotherhood. i mainly joined since i just want any kind of social life

i've been thinking of living in an apartment with strangers instead. Maybe the apartment would be a better idea since i only have 3 other personalities to deal with.

i talked to the president last semester about my not fitting in, a few weeks after rush, and he said that he went through the same feelings of loneliness due to not knowing anyone that well. i bet instead of telling me that this frat isnt for me, theyre just lying since they want my money
