Are any of you nerds or used to be nerds as in you care more about school marks than your social life? I for one used to be a huge nerd...nothing else matters to me aside from school marks. Now in university, i'm starting to see the importance of making friendships as it gets boring if you have few friends.

Depends how you're defining nerd.

I'm more of a nerd-punk. I'm asexual and don't have any desire to make or have casual friends so I can't say it is hurting my social life.

I would rather have books and information to absorb than deal with most people. I can go from the latest literary fiction to being deep in a programming guide. Information is interesting -- most people are not. I cannot tolerate noises, odors, lights, etc, so clubs and bars were never my thing.

Books are almost like friends, for me. Some editions I have had since elementary school (Poe, Hugo) when I picked them up used. I didn't understand them, but I was intrigued.

AMEN books are my life! I love getting good grades too, but the knowledge and books are even more important. I can't even begin to explain my obsession with books...

What if they decide just to do music in school and is seldom seen without an earphone (linked to the MP3 player)?

I am a nerd and I am proud of that. I rather be the great student who has lots of money and a successful career, than the social butterfly, who has no brains and no future. Studying, learning, reading, and academics are my way of fun and stress relief. Also, since I was a child, I loved all of the educational toys, like math manipulatives. When I played with my dolls, I always played school, as both the student and the teacher. I would have my stuffed animals as honor students in the genius honors program. Being a nerd gives me a sense of accomplishment, like I am smart, especially when I am in an environment where people think and treat me like I am dumb because I have a disability.

I don't think that is the definition of asexual. Asexuals make friendships too.

Glad that you make use of your strengths to thrive in your own definition.

I think it's good that being 'nerdy' helps you to have better self-esteem.

You are totally right about the value of being a bookworm and a academic workaholic. I am in my third year of college and I am literally addicted to studying as we speak (this is just a brand new habit of mine). I have started recently been getting into this habit of whenever i come home from school, I get down to my assignments and try to get it out of the way as soon as possible. Whenever I want to learn something or study for a test, I make sure that I review everything as repetitively, until I get every single thing done correctly. For all my life I was a midiochre student and underestimated the value of school, but I want to work my ass of more then most people and get A's, with a few B's on the side. My attitude now is that if I get a D or F, heck even if I get a C, I will literally explode and almost nearly commit suicide. I want to keep up with this new attitude, because I want to get a Bachelors Degree and have a fun job which i can make tons of money doing.

I also think that as you become a junkie about school-related issues, this will open better doors to improve your social skills with not only your freinds and family, it will even enable you to do things properly and correctly as well. Being a studyholic can put you in the doors of the NT world, or even in a better spot. I have recently picked up this habit and it only has made my life even better. That is all I can say.

I'm probably what most people would consider a 'nerd'. This is because I've done really well in school and I've got a knack for mathematics. Also I've been a bit reluctant to go out with friends when they do something that I consider boring. I do feel very thrilled when I achieve a high grade in something and I also love the academic rigour at school/college.

I think other people would consider me a nerd, because of the way I look (they'd think I wear 'nerd'-ish glasses though they aren't really) and speak (a bit 'posh'), and also the fact that I'm good at certain video games.

(Y)

I was always bullied for being a 'bof'

I am at university to WORK, not to go clubbing and get wasted every night like others seem to. I despise evrything about clubbing, I don't even feel safe leaving my room. I prefer to be locked inside.
I have made about 5 friends since September and several other acquaintances, but that is it. I am severely uncomfortable around the girl from my flat who is very social and ALWAYS inviting friends around. I hate them in my kitchen because it means I can't go in, or if I do I'm very anxious. I am aiming to get a first so I can do a postgrad in film at Oxford University.
As I heard aforementioned social butterfly telling her mum 'I got a B and have to retake 2 modules-but that doesn't mean I failed'. What does it mean then? I got 3 B+ and an A which I am happy with seeing how much pain, anxiety and trouble my first term caused me. And I still managed to make enough friends I can trust, without letting my work suffer.

DEFINITELY. School comes first, social life comes... last, pretty much. :P

School is my life- I love school, and learning in general! I want to know everything about history, Latin, mostly all subjects except math. I prefer to be alone and do lots of research and reading on my own, except for the fact that I love talking to my teachers more than almost anything else. I spend most of my free time at school in teachers' offices talking to them... it's fun :)
