I totally agree with your viewpoint. My school has a decent reputation coupled with a good [in-state] price. There's no way I would be in debt for the next half of my life just for the bragging rights of a hot ranking.
It depends on the class. If it's something I really really enjoy like history or english I'll do well but something like math or science it's more difficult. High school was the same way.
