I love doing research reports but I loathe essay questions. With essay questions, you must always think about what the teacher wants to hear rather than what you feel is accurate. You can use all the statistics in the world but if you deviate from the teacher's opinion, all hell breaks loose.

I hated them in school. Now, the only ones, I have to do are for English and they are only graded on how badly the English grammar is mutilated. I completely disagreed with my teacher and got a 1 :)

I dislike the essay assignments for English where you have to read a text and say how the writer used language, etc. I just can't put into words what they want to know. Apparently, in an article about Hurricane Katrina, the phrase "state of emergency" is an effective use of language - I pointed out to the teacher that that's simply stating what happened (ie. the writer didn't decide that, the president did), and everyone laughed for some reason even though I was being serious.

I like essays for history class, because I can understand what they're asking for.

Why would people laugh? You were right about that. Maybe its supposed to be a good use of language from some historic government guy who created the phrase "state of emergency" rather than the journalist.

You should have gone to my school, one of my A-level economist teachers actually hid her views, she dared us to figure it out but apparently only one student ever did. Our two politics teachers could not have been better chosen to give alternative opinions if someone had deliberately recruited them for that reason, and that's despite both being right wing). Essay's for both subjects were marked for giving both viewpoints, if you didn't your screwed.

Depends what the teachers expectations are. If the teacher knows me well and is easy-going then I don't seem to mind essays that much. Though I can agree with you, they are indeed stressful to do.

i don't hate essay assignments. I lOVE THEM! (esp compared to multiple choice tests). Essays gives you more room to express yourself and your opinions.

The better writing assignments are the ones where you have at least some control over what position your thesis can take. That's not the case at the beginning of high school, though, where writing consists of being to defend whatever interpretation of a literary text you're given. The problem with this is that isn't the point of taking four years of literature in high school to be able to synthesis and defend personal opinions, using literature as merely a ground on which you can test out different opinions. Our exam on Romeo and Juliet was an essay where we had to prove that the heroes' deaths were caused primarily by the social pressures of their parents. This is a pretty standard interpretation of the text, but what if you thought otherwise?

I am pretty used to essay questions and assignments. Through out majority of my course I have taken, they all had a few essays to write here and there including on exams. So I am used to writing essays for my classes.
