Apparently a teacher found out a nickname I use in another forum (and on an IRC server) and used it nonchalently in a comment in the portal system of the college, I attend. It was not visible for anyone else, and the nickname never was that much of a secret. I am still kinda scared to go to the class of this teacher now, because frankly, I am scared what a simple googling will find out about that instance of me. (I shouldn't be because the word is a simple term in a foreign language, but since when are emotions logical?)

So, yeah: make sure your nick can't be traced back to you!

Any ideas to make his class easier for me?

How the heck does one "nonchalantly" out the fact that they know someone's online nickname? And why? I think perhaps it's time for a conference with the professor.

Patricia

I believe its the professor's problem. You can speak with them, I suppose, but I prefer to ignore the professor in these situations.

My nick can be traced to a few things. So what? If people have problems accepting what they can find by googling my nickname, well, what can I say? I guess we will not be able to communicate very well.

How? As comment on an assignment "Not everything is <reference to nick>, please also consider <stuff>".

Why? Because it kinda fitted the context, because it also was associated with my real name on a site '5 clicks away from $majornewssite'. I used this as an 'official'/'presentable' nick before I discovered other channels on $server, where I used the same nick. I guess I just used it too much to rant about college lately on IRC and thus I am kinda embarrassed.

I still think this was a rather inappropriate thing for your professor to do. I would feel very much like my privacy had been violated. Unless it's a common word that could have been used innocently?

Patricia
