Holding a Pen or Pencil or Paintbrush or Similar Instrument

^^ Greetings everyone, I am sorry to bother you all. May I please ask, how do you perhaps hold a pen or pencil or similar instrument? I believe I hold such very different to every human I have come across (excluding my happy great auntie, although I have not seen her do so, yet she has informed me of this). As opposed to using my index and middle fingers and thumb near the bottom of the pen, I use all of my fingers on my right hand with my index finger within the middle of the instrument, and my ring and little finger towards the happy bottom (with middle finger betwen my index and ring finger, and thumb near the bottom also). ^^ Does any other individual hold a pen such as this? Or similar to many humans? Or in a different manner? Sorry if this is silly of me.

I use a 4-finger hold where my thumb and middle finger are 180 degrees and ring and index finder are 180 degrees as low as comfortable for that hold. Teachers for years tried using grips to change my hold with no progress. Now it does not matter.

Your description seems perfect to describe the way I hold the pen, I learned to write very early on my own and I've kept that position ever since, it's always been something funny for people to notice, so is this just another AS "trait" ?

I have my thumb on the right side, index finger on top, and the other three fingers underneath. My handwriting sucks though, so I wouldn't recommend using it my way unless others use it that way too

Hi Tomasu! That's not a silly question at all! I always hold my pencil like the top stick of a chopstick. I think I've never seen anyone hold it your way! It sounds interesting.

I hold my pen differently from everyone I have ever seen. I have a much firmer grip on it, and kind of curl my thumb around it. This causes my thumb to seize up quite a lot. I've always held my pen weirdly and can't write at all holding it the 'normal' way.

I can't describe it so I'll show pictures. Hope that's okay:





Excuse the poor photos and ugly hand.
It is incredibly hard to hold a heavy DSLR camera in my left hand whist trying to take a picture of my right hand holding a pen.

My thumb actually tucks in much more than in the photos, so that it is hidden under my other fingers, but I couldn't do that whilst holding the camera.

I have a very tight grip on my pen, especially with my thumb. I've always held my pen this way and will probably continue to do so, even though it gives my thumb horrible cramps.

My handwriting is also often very illegible to many humans (my German teacher in my high school often appeared very unhappy when he required to mark a piece of magical writing that I had created). ^^ I would also wish to post some happy photographs of my method in for you all to see also, thank you very much for your idea Hala. I shall do this very shortly I believe.

^ Go to an image hosting site like photobucket.com or imageshack.us (you may need to create an account - shouldn't take long). Then you can click the browse/choose files button and search for the file on your hard drive. Then click 'upload' and your photo will now be uploaded onto the site. You can then show the image here by using this code:

^^ I am very sorry if there is difficulty in seeing the method in which I hold the pen as my finger are rather twisty here.

That is quite an unusual way to hold a pen. Mine is an unremarkable three-finger hold. (But I like my handwriting.)

Mine is like Tomasu's, only the 3rd and 4th finger is behind the pen, not on top of.

I hold a pen like Hala does, but with my left hand.

I hold my pen in the same way as Tomasu.
