You can ask an employee of the rec room if they know of someone.
You can look up lessons on the Internet, and see if one of these instructors will come out to the university.
You can ask your dorm mates and the people you're starting to have meals with. 'Hey, anyone here maybe interested in pool lessons, if we all kick in a little bit of money . . . '
And you can do these in any order!
What you are exercising is low-key leadership. Leadership with easy, matter-of-fact confidence. And when someone else wants to take over and run with the ball, you'll generally let them, as long as it's in a generally positive direction, and it usually is. And later, you can pick the ball back up and add another positive activity, and several people can be doing different positive activities all at the same time.
You can stop off at the rec room, practice, add a little fun to your day. Occasionally, you can play with a stranger, maybe have some slight conversation. That will probably be the extent of it. Just accept it for the slight bonus that it is.
My mother is Aspie. I may or may not be Aspie, but I have certainly learned the social skills of the Aspie approach. And my mother's approach is to bask. To do well in the science fair and stand and bask. And that's not what make for rich experiences in life. What makes for rich experiences are being a member of a team and building a team. So, it's not about you by yourself being a standout pool player (and when you win, win graciously), it's about you and some dorm mates winning together. And on a fun casual afternoon, if someone makes a joke about the championship of the world, the intergalatic whatever, whatever, or about Allison Fisher "The Duchess of Doom" (the only professional pool player I can name! and such a very British nickname) . . . roll with it. The day dream is of competing together on a big stage, winning together, bringing out your best games together, as friendly and respectful competitors. And in the meantime, maybe some fun rec room tournaments!
