Sometimes I indulge in convoluted mental conversations.

I have little mental conversations with myself over things that haven't happened and may never happen.

Like the few days before my daughter goes to school for the first time.(I just picked a gender for the kid.)

Okay, time for a little orientation rant. You will find that some parts of school are fun in ways you could not have out of school. You will find some parts of it wonderful and look back on them as fond memories. You may create social bonds with people there which you cherish greatly, and talk to people which you will come to respect. However you must be prepared for the inevitable creativity stopping, soul crushing parts which have been implemented with the intention of preparing you for the real world. You may, and will likely find people who are mean, unreasonable, disagreeable and immature. People who you look to for authority may betray you. And the teachers may prepare lessons in such a way that it destroys any hope of you ever investing interest in that subject again. And then they may judge your progress, in a way you may consider to be missing the point, so that you begin to question your competance and worth as a human being.
You must armor yourself with knowing that not everyone in the world is as immature and callous as the people you are likely to meet in your journey, and that every teacher you meet is ignorent to some degree and that the many of the things they tell you may be largely their own opinion or their own interpretation.
But I advise that you hold your toungue that you know this(or have heard my belief on it), because they don't take kindly to people pointing out the holes in their system, no matter how obvious you think those holes are.

I like talking to myself ^_^.

I do the exact same thing - and also when I have some sort of experience that has signifigance - the one that sticks in my head is when I went to an autism conference and got to talk to Temple Grandin on live simocast it took me a good three days to process it all and I was asking myself questions the whole time like 'how many seats in the room?' or 'what color shirt was she wearing?' and things to clarify events in my head . . .
I do the same thing with important emails - got one from my best friend last night about the cat situation and I've saved it so I can read it again and get more than the basic meaning out of it . . .

I think that the talking to yourself about what you want to say to your daughter is rehersing - I do that, too - like another person I know teaches a sex education class and goes to different schools every week and she went to do her program at a very rural school and met a student who very clearly had AS and so she asked his teacher during lunch and he said 'he has some kind of autism' and this being a rural district - it is likely he wasn't getting services - so she told the teacher she knew an autistic person and would like for us to get in touch - and then told me to write him a letter - so for two days - everything I was doing I was thinking about what I would say to this person - then distilled it down into the letter . . .

So my rambling point is that this does not sound too unusual to me . . . which may or may not mean it is really unusual :)

Add my big "ME TOO!" here. I think of it as preparing scripts for dealing with real life situations, so that if I happen to find myself in one of those situations I have a plan of attack. Of course, some of my plans are for really whacked out things, like what to do if an asteroid wipes out civilization and I'm one of the few survivors with the technical skills to help rebuild, but hey, you never know, right? :)

Oh yeah - I have long flow charts in my head about what to do in any situation - like I hate to drive because vision is one of my seriously fubared senses - so part of one involves things that can happen while you are driving - you can get there safely or not - if you don't get there safely it could be because your car broke down, you got in a wreck, or something very unusual happened - if the car breaks down you use the cell phone to call a wrecker then wait until they get there, if something really unusual happens you come up with a flow chart of what to do on the spot - now if you are in a wreck - that opens up a whole new flow chart - is anyone hurt or not? If someone is hurt then you . . . etc . . .

I have tons of those - for everything - and they make me feel better because I can go into autopilot in a stressful situation becasue I already have it mapped out . . .
In fact, as a child I thought that by thinking of all the solutions to a problem I could prevent the problem from happening - turns out I was just minimizing my response to the problem if it DID happen . . .

I spend quite a bit of time living imaginary conversations myself...I think it substitutes for my social life, and when I get some time to write books, it might be the basis of a career.

Yeah, I tend to have odd conversations with myself. My parents often complain that I talk to myself too loudly. I tend to act like I am talking to somebody else, often a conversation that I will never have and never intend having and usually to somebody I know to some extent. I don't know, I guess my talking to myself substitutes for my social life to some extent. Meh, whatever. I enjoy my introspection.

I definitely think about what might happen if s**t like a meteor hits my friend as were walking along the street to mcdonalds. I think given the situation, it would really be amusing(since there is nothing really productive that can be done about a fatal meteor strike) if i said something like, "I guess this means i can eat taco bell afterall."

Nomaken, maybe you should be a writer! Absolutely loved your essay on what you would say to your kid on the first day of school! That is worth publishing.

I do the same thing. I used to fixate on worst-case scenario situations that could happen to me. While it was unhealthy on one level, it helped me alot because I already felt like I'd been through the worst of it, so no matter what happened I could deal with the outcome! Kinda strange.

I try and think out all sorts of ways to handle diferent situations to the point one of my obsessions was wild eatable plants just incase of disaster. BTW wierd things do happen someone who wI gradutated with from college but didn't know died when she was backing out of her driveway and her car was hit by a small airplane. So you have to be ready.
