How often do you skip classes? In high school I never skipped class, and i started to skip class during the last week of lectures during 1st year university. Now, i skip like every other 8:30am class. I have 8:30 class everyday this term.

I skipped all throughout high school, so my parents put me in an evening school. Since I hated school so much, I joined the Navy after graduation instead of going to college....Which was a raging mistake that I will regret forever. Talk about hell....No offense to service people, but all of the yelling and sleep deprivation... I think I had PTSD just from boot camp!! ! :?

so i'm guessing you didn't care that your parents knew you were skipping. Because part of the reason why i didn't skip high school classes was because if you were under 18 years old, you would get a phone call home, like an automated message saying which periods you skipped. The other reason why i never skipped HS classes was because I couldn't find any excuse or reason to skip. I stay up later in university so it will be harder to go to 8:30 classes everyday. Of course, I end up staying up late cause I spend more time doing other stuff (not schoolwork).

We had the automated phone call too, you just had to make sure to be home and answer it. I'm not proud of it, my school was just incredibly crowded and I always had my head on my desk. I hated it. Night school was better because it was less crowded and the counselor actually counselled. I hope you quit skipping class because someone is paying for you to be there, right?

Well, you could think of it in a sense that someone is paying for me to enroll in that course, I mean if i'm tired and can't absorb anything then there is no point of going to class.

University is a lot harder than school because you have to discipline yourself. If you don't show up for 08.30 lectures/seminars, you won't get a bollocking from your parents or your tutor, you'll just flunk all your classes.

Read the textbook and/or coursenotes

I never skipped a class in high school and made it to my second year of college without skipping a class. My second year I decided to transfer schools so it wasn't overly important what classes I took in the meantime. So, I ended up taking classes I was good at and had an interest in, which meant I already knew a great deal about the subjects. That being the case, I skipped half my classes every week because it wasn't necessary for me to attend to get decent grades.

I can understand how this is valid in a university-level situation: most particularly, in an upper-level mathematics course where there's a finite set of ways to present the material. There was a thread about question-asking in university classes a while back, where someone argued that asking questions in class was "overrated" (you may wish to check yourself to make sure I am not misquoting). Both of those statements exemplify a lot of people in my mathematics and computer science departments - they think, "Oh, I am too smart to be in this course, so I should not attend" - as if it is an ethical principle, I add: sometimes these are 1:30PM classes! I'd argue that if you have the foresight to read the textbook, then it is the wiser to go to class, since - as you know what's going on in the first place - you can use lecture time as effectively as possible to come ever closer to mastery: if you got the details of the proofs, use lecture to learn the main ideas; if you understood the geometric intuition behind a concept from the book, use lecture to understand how the definitions extend the concept beyond its geometrical motivation (using a math example because that's what I know - you can replace this with anything from your field).

I've skipped a whole month in grade 8, and my parents had no idea until they saw my report card. They were shocked!

And guess why I skipped so much? To play computer games (I was into Neopets at that time )! Oh, and the bullying and teasing too. I also had a meltdown once and hit a 5th grader (!), and almost got suspended. They made an exception for me, though. I still wonder why. :?

Whenever I used to have a meltdown or was upset one day, I would used to skip a lesson or bunk off and don't come in on that day :)

I don't really do that as much anymore now, I just get my lessons over and done with, but when I accidently over sleep, sometimes I would actually skip the whole day, which i've only did that twice in the whole year :)

The first time I skipped a class was when I was 13. A friend of mine let me tag along when she and a few others went to the corner shop down the road. After that I skipped classes occasionally but I don't do it any more.

That's what I do. I actually don't see the purpose of lectures. Well, except when and if the lecturer gives out tips about exam near the end of a semester. Tutorial may be useful sometimes since the class is a lot smaller.
