Anyone here know how to "learn" being able to pick up the beats/accents in words so you can read poetry correctly? I've just always had this problem where I cannot tell what part of a word is emphasized.

Its weird for me too, but I love poetry.
I just keep reading it and reading it, until the beat just comes to me.
Have you read Poe's "The Bells"? That has a very predominate beat to it - very easy to read the first time.

i dont get poetry at all

I'm a rapper. Doesn't guarantee I always know the intended rhythm of other people's poetry, but I can usually find a rhythm that makes sense to me fairly easily, unless it's very complex.

That is tough for me too. Strange as it sounds, if you read enough poetry the beat will sort of come to you naturally after a while. You will unconsciously put in the right words for the rhythm. It's important to practice writing a great deal because you can't improve if you don't practice. Showing your work to others who are good at poetry and can give an honest critique without being rude is important for improvement because often poems sound better to ourselves than they actually are.
