I was a top student in kindergarten and grade 1; I was basically perfect. I was the only kid in my kindergarten class who could read. From grade 2 through 12 I was mediocre. :)

I was overwhelmed, everything just flooded into my thinking and I was unable to filter anything out. I never sat one exam in my life as I was too anxious to be able to focus on anything.

Glad it seemed better for you ana

I am doing exceptionally well at school. My GCSE "Working At Grades" mainly consist of As and A*s.
I got an A (88%; 2 marks off an A*) in my RE exam (50% of a GCSE). If that is my weaker subject, then God knows (Speaking of Religious Education! :D) what I can get in my better subjects!

By the end of primary school I was unable to make any sense of school I would sit at the back of the class and zone out into my own world perhaps writing two or three lines into my exercise book where the rest of the class had written pages. Fortunately, at some point a shrink had figured I weren't stupid.
I was sent to a special school where learning to socialise was given a greater priority than academic achievement. I recall after an assessment at about age 15 my parents were delighted I had a B- on my report, I was disappointed because my brother had multiple A's on his reports.
I left school with some CSE's 2 of which were Grade 1 which were equivalent to 'O' level.

Throughout the whole time I knew I was a whole lot more clever than I ever had credit for.

I did subsequently pass many City & Guilds units with credits and several distinctions at college.

In preschool I was bored because I didn't know how to socialize and I already knew everything they were teaching (tying shoes, numbers, alphabet). In kindergarten it was much the same. I remember hating nap time, I could NOT sleep. In first grade, the school recommended skipping me a grade up, but my parents felt this would be bad for me socially and didn't. Idiots.

In 2nd grade, the aspie traits turned me into a target, but my grades were great. Grades 3-6 were horrible socially and I did everything to avoid school, which was a nightmare. My grades suffered, though on the standardized tests I always scored in the top 98th percentile. This made no sense to them and further perpetuated the idea that I was just a problem child.

Grades 7 and 8 I went to a small private school and did really well socially (relatively speaking) and academically.

Grade 9 was a nightmare I don't care to even think of. My parents put me back in public school with the bullies. In 10th grade I quit, on my 16th birthday. I had never felt so happy or relieved in my life. I also left home and never went back.

Took the GED test and passed with flying colors the summer after I left school. Applied to college and was accepted (due to test scores) but only "provisional" until I proved myself academically because of the GED. Got a 3.9 my first semester.

Thanks for writing your stories to this thread. It's very fascinating to read what has happened in your lives.

As a parent, I'm always wondering what is going to happen with my son. He falls into the category of those AS kids who do fairly well socially, but not quite as stellar as some of you academically. He is definitely a smart kid, but boy, we have to spend a lot of time preparing him for tests, explaining written assignments, etc. I'm just curious if he will hit a stride when he gets older, where maturity, smarts and self-confidence hit and he will "find himself".

I am very impressed, siuan, that you left school, which frankly takes guts to get out of the situation of crappy high school life, and then GET your GED and then GO to college, all without parental guidance. Where do you get your drive?

Kris

I was told I could graduate a grade early in high school; it would take some extra work over the summer, but it was possible. I wanted to do it, but my aunt had graduated a year early and felt that it hindered her socially; my parents took her advice and kept me on the normal rotation. I adore my aunt, I really do, but we're completely different people, especially in social situations. I'm a junior now, and I would have absolutely loved for this to be my last year; but it isn't, and there's no point in wishing for it now, I guess.

For the original question: I got straight As up until the 4th grade. I flunked a test here and there in the first few grades (tracing and handwriting were the big ones; I still can't really do the former), but the rest of my work made up for it. I then received As and a few Bs from the forth grade on (only one B in forth grade; I was horrified at the time. I didn't realize it was an acceptable grade). I got one C, in the sixth grade, I think, in math; another round of horror (ha, I so didn't get it; obviously, I overreacted). From that point on, it's been As and Bs.

My grades are looking suspiciously low so far, but they looked the same last year; I ended up getting a 3.995 GPA then, so I probably shouldn't worry too much.

Socially, I did well enough in preschool through second grade. It's gone down since then; this year is the worst, followed by last year, which was followed by the year before; I'm sure you see the pattern.

I belived my stepfather when he told me I was thick, so I was somewhat surprised to find myself in the top stream of 6 every year, not that it did me any good as I managed to get myself thrown out of Maths, French and German due to my behaviour.
