I don't get it. I'm studying marketing&Interactive Media, but can't seem to engage my fixed interest in sailplanes(a.k.a. gliders)
into it! Any help out there? Should I drop out?

Sometimes, what you study at university doesn't mesh perfectly with your special interest.

However, that's no reason to drop out--just find the time to do both. It can be done.

Make time for your studies (schedule it on paper, if that helps) and time for your special interest, the way you would a hobby. Put that time on paper too, so you'll see that it has just as much importance in your life as your studies.

Also, it's highly possible that a year or so down the line, a way to "mesh" the two will suddenly present itself.

Believe me putting it on paper and making a schedule helps, I tend to neglect chores and other things if they're not on a schedule.

Are you trying to link your special interest with your studies, or are you trying to find time to both study and participate in your special interest?

If it's the former - marketing/interactive media sounds pretty disparate from your special interest. Thought about studying something that's closer to your interest?

If it's the latter - scheduling is the key.

Kvornan,

Are you taking marketing because you see yourself in the marketing business?

There are many wonderful things University can teach you. Many of these may seem unnecessary or boring in the short term, but can actually help you with your fixed interests in the long run. if you have done some careful career exploration and are sure you want to be in a line of work solely involved with your fixed interest, see if your institution offers any courses in engineering, physics, or design that might allow you to work with gliders directly.

University can benefit you in a host of ways, but understanding what you would like to get out of it, and finding people at your institution that can help you decide how best to achieve your goals, is vital to your happiness and progress.
