As a nurse, I have seen the effects of smoking. Lung cancer is almost unheard of in non-smokers who don't work in coal mines or huff asbestos. It only gets about 10% of smokers. It gets a lot of press, but is actually one of the least significant problems with smoking. Most smokers who die from smoking get nailed with heart disease.
However, the biggest risk is COPD. For someone who has smoked more than 20 years, the risk of COPD is nearly 100% and doesn't go away after the person stops smoking (unlike cancer risk). So someone who has smoked for more than 20 years, quit for 10 or more years, WILL get COPD if they live long enough. Its just a question of how bad it is. COPD is fatal, but it can take 20 years to nail someone.
Either way, smoking isn't a smart thing to do.
How does second hand smoke affect a person? I heard it's even worse. My friend's parents smoke, and I smell it even on her in school (she does not smoke)
