I understand most stuff of maths.
But there is one thing I really suck at, and those are word problems (with more then 1 unknown things).
Compared with my class I understand math faster, but with word problems I suck too much, that it can't be normal. My whole class is much better then me in math word problems.
Is this normal to Asperger? Or what kind of intelligence do you need to solve math word problems? (with more then 1 x's)
Maybe its not important but I'm mostly a big picture thinker, and I'm very bad with details.

Sorry for my english.

Could it be because we lack common sense about daily life? (Don't take it personally, I'm talking about aspies in general)

In a problem solving question, one needs to translate the word problem into equations before solving and sometimes it requires common sense since word problems take examples from everyday life (but you rarely need to actually think about it in everyday life).

I'm sorry but it has nothing to do with common sense.
The examples are surreal but based on common life, but it has nothing to do with common sense.

Not all Aspies are good at math - myself being the prime example.

I'm having a hell of a time in my pre-algebra class in college. I learned a lot of this in high school, but I just forgot it all. Plus, I liked my high school teacher's method of teaching way better.

I have the same problem, (plus, I'm only good at maths sometimes, when I want to, I do not know).

I think that it is hard to visualise the mathematical informations which were put inside the words, it's easier when you use picture to do them. Perhaps you could try to draw down everything that you can ?

I assume you're talking about algebra here?

I hated algebra, it was hard for me to remember the different formulas and methods for each type of equation. In the end I did alright at it for my test because I spent hours making sure I got it stuck in my head.

Of course, I've forgotten it all now and I am very glad I was able to.

Just find a method of remembering it and working it out that works for you then once the tests are over you'll never have to worry about it again - no one actually uses algebra in the real world

Algebra gets used in the real world all the time. How much it gets used depends greatly on what field you're in, but quite a few use algebra regularly.

That was a joke, but I don't think many people use it a lot unless they work in a mathematical or scientific field.

I sucked at word problems too, which was why I usually skipped them on tests. I don't advise you to do that though!

It's the fact that they're worded so oddly and that all of those words are so close together...they always gave me the urge to close the textbook and turn on the playstation.

When you have time alone to study, read the problem and work in sections. Circle key words if you have to. Write down the facts as a list and it may be easier to understand than a paragraph. That's usually how I'd get them right (when I could focus).

I cannot STAND math! I'm even lucky that I'm not taking a math class this year. Even if I passed Algebra 2 with at least a C, it was still hard!

I could never memorize the basic addition, multliclipaication subtraction and division problems. Still can't and I am going to have to fight tooth and nail to be able to use a calculator for my exams and MCAT.

I have this problem with all word-questions of every subject. For me it's the way they are worded it's like the questions are riddles.

Provide an example problem and I'll attempt to solve it and explain it. Keep it a non-graded problem though.
