I got in trouble on the short bus yesterday for playing my music "Too Loud". I have sensory issues to noise and need to block those kids OUT of my ears!! ! Especially this one kids who pratically screams bloody murder. He screams like this "GIGIGIGIGIGIGIGI!! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !!" He stepped on my foot while screaming so I almost went off on him. He's in a "Life Skills" which is basically a dumping ground for kids who are MR(Mentally ret*d) who don't have the right skills to be in a normal class. If that's a "Life Skills" class to think they could teach hime somthing called manners, proper English and how to stay quiet at 6:00 in the morning!! !! Not to mention the middle schoolers, they scream and whine, b***h and moan. I just feel like telling the driver, "Until you can turn those kids down, tell that one to quit stomping and failing I'll turn my music down." They told me it was a saftey issue, we'll if you need my attention that friggin bad have those kids stomp on my feet and scream in my ear!! ! Sorry, but I had to get that BS off my chest.

I HATE, HATE, HATE school buses - I was in special ed for 2 years and I rode those god forsaken things. The buses I ride now, well except for San Francisco's Muni are much better - comfy seats that recline and wifi on board. I hated the stench and kids melting down on the short bus. I was near a short bus the other way ago and a few kids on it were hawking loogies on people's cars!

And I don't think a school bus is built to protect its passengers, those things are as frail as a Honda in a crash. And like a Honda, a school bus has NO guts, even a Prius or me on a road bike can climb a hill faster.

Get some noise-isolating headphones. I happen to like Skullcandy FMJ's but you can buy a decent set at Wal-Mart for $20.

I never rode the short bus, but get noise-reducing headphones. Some good ones. People tend to complain about these things sometime, my stepmother was very confrontational to me about this.

It'll cost you about 20 bucks, just make sure they are high-quality.

As others have said, noise isolating headphones are your friend. I brought a pair from an Australian electronics shop for about $20 (AU, of course.) They aren't great, but they do their job.

Living in a rural area means that my buses are generally empty and quiet. I've never really had to put up with the situation you've described, thankfully.

I rode the short bus as well but always wore headphones with my music and there weren't that many kinds on that bus. The only problem I had was the stigma of riding the "ret*d bus".

I'd rather be caught dead in a Honda or a Hyundai than a short bus.

I know how that is. I always hated riding the short bus. People would always be like "Eric! There's your bus! haha" and it was embarrassing. I hated it. I felt like I was the only normal one on the bus. There were kids I really did not like and felt they were complete ret*ds. There was one kid who thought he could make a U.F.O and said that "It would be really easy. All I need is to find the essential parts to make it." and he was completely serious. But, it's funny, I feel bad for making fun of those kids on the bus now. It's probably because I want to become a Special Education teacher.

I don't really understand why aspies would have to ride the short bus.

Sorry to hear that.

I go to mainstream 6th form, and I sometimes take the bus. I like it, except the smell gets v. overpowering sometimes (it's not pungent or anything...you know the stuffy bus smell), and I have a thing about stepping on and off the bus. I'm scared I'm going to trip over the step, but I don't want to lift my foot too high so it looks silly. It's a precarious few moments- and then, saying hello and thank you to the driver! Horrors! :) Then not whacking anyone in the face as I go down the aisle to ring the bell five minutes too early so I don't go too far...I can tell you, I have issues on the basis of my bus behaviour :D
