Im 17 male and have ASD and in high school and I have been experiencing the weirdest schedule shifts ever. I keep getting mixed up in different classes that I sometimes have and don't. During my 8th grade year I had math but it was at the other classes lunch time so it felt like I was not learning anything because everyone was at lunch at the time that I was doing math. I also get pulled out of class a lot because of this. I don't know but I would like to know am I the only kid who failed my Algebra 1 math class? I was a junior and I was in mostly a freshman algebra 1 math class and I feel like an idiot because I lasted only a semester in that class before I was pulled out for how badly I did in that class. I feel so humiliated that I failed a freshman math class as a junior. Whenever someone asks me what math class I have I never tell them because if I said I don't have one this last semester they will say something like "Uh don't you need like 2 years of math in order to graduate?" and I am like "Yes I know." and I just never talk to anyone about this to people. I also have people forget about me in my schedule and that they would not recognized that I need a class of some importance and that they forget to add it to my list. Anyone else have this problem?

Hey there :)

I'd say from reading this that the first thing you need to do is go see your guidance counselor or advisor or whoever it is that handles scheduling. You need to talk to them about all of this and explain what you need in your schedule to do well.

Also, I don't think you're the only one to ever fail Algebra 1 in high school. I almost did. I barely passed. I've always had difficulty doing math. My brain doesn't think in negative numbers and it doesn't like to work out complex multi-step math problems. As a result I failed my first college math class last semester (and I was in the easiest math class my university offers).

So next, have you considered tutoring? A girl I know who is a math major has been helping me study for my exams. Maybe you can find someone to help you? I'd also recommend talking to your current math teacher or one that you've had previously and liked (or email them if that works best for you, it does for me). Maybe one of them will be willing to help you out.

In college, advisors don't give a crap about student schedules, it's the students responsiblitiy. Not knowing this I got a screwed up schedule my first semester. I kinda know how much it sucks. And the math class I failed is something called a self paced class. The professor doesn't teach, you buy the book, you sit in the room and do the problems, and then you take the exams when you're ready.

Everyone apparently learns math in different ways. You need to find what works for you, be it having someone teach you one on one or doing something like the self-paced class I mentioned (if thats an option). If you've been diagnosed I would mention it to your advisor. They have to help you get the classes you need and set up some kind of plan to help you get to graduation. I think in most states thats actually law, but you'd have to look it up.

Good luck, and if you've got any questions for me feel free to ask!
