I've learned today that some of the special ed teachers at my former high school have been hospitalized due to injuries from a highly aggressive autistic student.

Do you think anybody in modern society would even entertain the thought of allowing teachers to sedate certain aggressive students? Can you imagine what the permission forms to undergo such an operation would sound like? "...you hereby have our permission to sedate our child in the event that he gets violent."

At least in most states, that requires a doctor's order.

No good. That would actually cause MORE violent behavior since the sedatives would seem to the child more like a reward than a punishment.

I struggled to keep my cool in school and went through a brief kill'em all phase in jr. high. Do you really want to think about how many bullies I'd have gratuitously swung at if I knew it meant a quick trip to HappyLand?

Yeah, but there are probably good reasons for that (it being difficult to drug people).

I just read (a few days ago) a report about anti-psychotics being used for non-psychotic conditions in nursing homes, and it's apparently pretty rampant. I think it's hard for people (who are in charge) not to end up overusing such drugs.

And that doesn't even get into how those drugs can interfere with learning, and have a slew side-effects, some of which can be permanent.

Learning? Who said anything about learning? School attendance is compulsory. Just because you GO as required by law doesn't mean you actually learn anything.
