Let's just say that there's only two types of teachers. The strict ones, and the lenient ones.

The strict teachers are the ones that have really high expectations. They set rules, and there are no exceptions to them. Students are expected to complete work to perfection, and any mistakes are counted against them.

On the other end of the scale, lenient teachers don't really care about anything. Instead of spending the class reading out of the book, much time is wasted talking about subject material completely irrelevant to the course.

Now, say you had a choice between one or the other. If there is no middle ground, which one would you choose?

From what I've noticed, it seems that most people (at least 95%) prefer strict teachers. Their argument is that in the more lenient classes, they don't really learn anything. They need information to be forced down their throat at a fast pace and be pressured into learning the material by fear of failing the class.

I, for one, disagree with this. Strict teachers prevent me from enjoying the learning experience. I'm not free to learn at my own pace and at my own will. With lenient teachers, I'm pretty much free to do whatever I want, and I want to learn. When I have more lenient teachers, I can learn more, because I can learn the way that works best for me, and as a bonus I don't feel like a prisoner doing it.

I was just wondering if anyone here is with me on this. I think it might be an aspie thing.

I think the biggest difference there might mostly be an actual desire to seek knowledge and to learn ...

... and I would guess even your own experience with a strict teacher shows that even though you do legitimately prefer a more "open and easy-does-it" approach.

Exactly. It really surprises me to find that most people don't desire knowledge. Obviously they say they do, but they don't follow through with it. It's as if they need some sort of motivation.

This is more administrative style in the classroom than teaching style.

I was and would still be FAR too strict for some [I remember the class that could not belive I really meant it when I said they had to turn in their papers] and FAR too lenient than others [some would shine if busy work were the whole deal].

I tried to help people develope a style of understanding rather than shovel in data. The data are out there, but most people do not have the intestinal animalcules to digest them.

Well, I hope that's true.

I've known many young people who get out in the real world and find they didn't learn as much as they thought...

I absolutely can't stand the lenient teachers because they tend to pick favorites with the students who don't have the desire to learn. They let them get away with things such as leaving the classroom without a hallpass and turning work in late when they expect everybody else to turn it in on time.

What do you mean? Nothing prevent you to learn if you want to. If you got enough discipline to learn under a lenient teacher, then you can just learn the stuffs you want to in your free time, even under the most strict teacher.

If you had asked me this in school, I would have said lenient. Ask me now, I would say strict.

I've had some teachers who you might describe as "lenient." I hated every minute spent in their classrooms. It was a waste of time, because they never bothered to teach. I may as well not be in the class at all and just attempt to learn the material on my own if the "teacher" isn't going to bother doing their job at all.

I prefer lenient teachers. One aspect about strict teachers that I can't stand is their "my way or the highway" style of teaching. At least lenient teachers will let us do our work in whichever way we're most comfortable with.

I prefer the strict teachers, the "read this paper", "Master this technique" "your assignment must meet the following criteria" is much easier for me. I also prefer to get proper feedback on what areas I need to improve in. Mind you, that could be my British mindset :P
