http://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/20 ... xt/c2/HTML

sections 1 and 3 of the bill. Read it and weep with joy :D

Although the CLAST was removed from law in 2009 the einsteins in the senate left the verbage that still required the universities to force the student to have 2.5 gpa in both math and english classes in order to graduate -or- pass an exam.

On May 3 they should be voting on this bill and as things look so far, it will pass. That verbage is slated to be removed and become effective July 1 2011.

So.. no more CEPT/CLAS exams required to be able to keep taking credit courses past 60 credit hours & to receive the degree.

'bout friggin time too. Ive been stuck on that damn math exam for years and didnt let me get my AA so I could move on to my ZERO math courses required bachelors.

Got a cigar for May 3... ooo its gotta pass :P

I had to deal with the CLAST, and I found it insulting.

Still, what this means is that if you get a transferable grade (D), you will graduate...so I hope employers scrutinize GPAs and transcripts when people claim to have a degree.

I know my law school had a minimum GPA for graduation (if you were under a C average, you were in danger of being kicked out if you didn't get it back up above 2.0). Being able to hold a degree for having the absolute bottom of a "passing" grade really makes you question the value of the degree itself.

Since you're familiar with all this law stuff Zero... the bill as shown on the link if passed.. will it remove the requirement to take that damn test (or any test)? I see they have section 1 and 3 slated for deletion from the statute/law/whatever but its sort of legalese to me so I *think* thats what it will do... what say you?

Without really scrutinizing the bill text, my initial impression is that CLAST is history (no pun intended), but colleges are still expected to create a standard that determines if you are eligible to graduate.

Using law school as an example, a D- was a passing grade for a class, but if you didn't have at least a 2.0 average, you would not graduate. So, you'd be forced to retake classes as needed to bring your GPA up or replace your worst grades with better ones. The GPA average requirement imposed an overall level of competence but allowed you one or two bad classes without endangering your graduation.

They might do a similar thing for community colleges. Rather than let you pass the CLAST exam and have a D average, they might impose an overall GPA requirement or that certain classes must be passed with a given grade to qualify towards graduation requirements.

This makes sense because it is insulting to have to prove proficiency at something after getting good grades in the class itself. I took a CLAST prep course for math because I'm not good at math (remembering all the fancy stuff) and didn't want to trust that I'd remember how to do everything on exam day. The prep class went over everything that would be on the CLAST and refreshed my memory on all of those topics shortly before I had to take the actual exam.

unbelievable. There's like 10 other bills out there proposing the same changes... one of which has been bouncing back and forth the senate and the house with small amendments.. and they need to have both sides pass it before this friday or it gets pushed to next year (screwing me royally along the way).

was supposed to be discussed in the house today and they didnt get to it.. for they were too busy giving speeches about themselves for hours on end. ><

Gov. signed it almost a month later..and the universities here took almost a whole month to adopt the change.

Message on my college's website posted this week reads:

Quote:
As of July 1st, 2011, the CLAS graduation requirement has been eliminated by the Florida legislature.

If you applied for Summer graduation, there are no additional steps you need to take at this time- you should be receiving confirmation that you have met all graduation requirement in the next few weeks. For future graduates, the CLAS graduation requirement will no longer apply.

Its 100% official now in state universities and colleges: CLAS is GONE.
