To start off, I am a special education and have a first grade student that has autism. He has a full time aide with him the whole day except when he comes to my class for one-on-one time for 2 separate blocks of 45 minutes where we work on reading and math. This is his second year in first grade and he is doing much better and is less overwhelmed because he has seen the information before and his classroom last year was poorly structured. His general education teacher is great and willing to work with him to not have an aide in class. We are having an ard next week to discuss pulling the aide out of the classroom because we both feel like she is hindering him from being fully independent and giving into him when he has melt downs. The aide and I were both at a workshop yesterday leaving the student in class without an aide for most of the day and the teacher said he did great. That he didn't have major behavior problems but just had a hard time finishing his work. He is communicating well and is able to express himself fine.
Would ya'll suggest pulling the aide out of the classroom for good? or on an as needed basis?

I'd try pulling the aide out, so that the other students don't instantly see the child as "different" because of the presence of the aide. With "as needed", if the child screws up even once, the whole class will find out.
