My Teachers will not let me take certian classes?
I am 18 and in my senior year and on a modified diploma and I really want to take Economics for this school because I heard that was required and for some reason my Case manager and my councilors are not letting me take it. The only reason why I know that they think that they will not let me take it is because they say that the class is to hard for me but I actually think it would be interesting. I have asked them several times to put me in that class but they will not let me due to the fact that I am on a modified diploma and I don't have to take it. I want to take it because it seems like all the other seniors are taking it and I am not and I want to be a part of the pack. My main class that I want is Econ and maybe a few others but Econ is the most important one. It is required for everyone else but not me and I feel like I am being left out when I don't take the class. What should I do about this situation? I have a idea that I could take it in community college and make up for it there but I don't know how that is going to work.
You shouldn't take a class just because everyone else is. Your counselors actually have your best interest at hand in this particular instance. However, they may have also wrongly estimated you. Sometimes I did very well in a course others didn't think I would do well in. Rather than taking the course for a grade, ask if you can sit in on it. You usually just have to ask the instructor. Explain your counselors won't let you take it but you are interested in the subject and want to learn more about it.
If that doesn't work, take it at the community college. In some states it's part of their breadth of general education requirements. It will usually be one of three courses you can take to full fill a particular section.

Economics is inherently simple. It has become complex because of government interference in the free market and its violation of individual property rights. (And no, the U.S. is not a capitalist economy and hasn't been for almost 100 years.)
As a note to those of you who want to analyze economic theories, you must first ask if the proposed economic policy is even ethical. Only if it is ethical, can you even begin to debate its efficacy. Hint: almost all economic policies are unethical, in that they constitute the initiation of force. This means that they forcibly confiscate the wealth of one person and give it to another. This includes all forms of communism, socialism, fascism, etc. (And no, voting is not an ethical means to make such decisions. A million, or even a billion people do not have the right to vote to take someone's property by force, such that it may be given to another.)

Some of us just have a little more madness than others!

If you want a model of what any completely libertarian society would look like, take a look at a 3rd world country. Any 3rd world county. It doesn't matter if they have regulations because they are not enforced.
Back when I was in High School I had the most amazing Resource Teacher one could ask for. I had him for Resource English and Study Skills.
I owe him a lot because he came to my Mother and I after telling him how I would love to take Econ as I know its a required class but I wasn't sure how the Math would be as that is not my forte.
Within a few days he said he would teach an independent study Econ class for another senior and I.
We were his trial class as he wanted to teach a full class the next semester after I graduated. He took the initiative to get it approved for credit and as soon as next semester started we were good to go.
I had so much fun researching the economy, educational system. The book was easy to follow and I loved watching he news and how it effected the economy.
My teacher gave two weeks to complete the final research paper. The other student was not as motivated as I was. Since this was my last class before I graduated I finished it within 5 days.
I got an A in the class and really loved it. Because I had a teacher who took an interest in me I felt so good.
The alternative mainstream Econ while doable would have been stressful.
I got my High School Credit and I learned more that I expected to.
You could say I was the model student and I was helping my fellow students with their work. I got comments that I brought an academic flavor to the lessons.
So the moral of the story is see if your teacher and case manager can do an independent resource Econ. Since you really want to do it and your accommodations would be built into the course.
Good luck.

If you don't have to take it for your diploma, then don't! The other kids will probably envy you for that. Also, if they say it's too hard for you then it might bring down your GPA, and that isn't something you want. You could ask about auditing the class, where you sit in, do the work etc but don't get an actual grade of any sort. Maybe they could let you do that in place of study hall, etc. As for the wanting to be "part of the pack" thing, I'd suggest joining a club of some sort instead. Extracirriculars are important on a college application, so you kill two birds with one stone that way. My 18 yo is a senior also, and she's never been into clubs etc, but this year she joined some so that she could have them on her college app. She picked Anchor Club and FBLA. They don't require much and it looks good on the app.
