Here's my story.
I don't have many friends at school. Those I do I've never seen outside of school.
Whenever the teacher asks us to go in groups, I wait to be forced into a group. Even if there's somebody I want to be with (and they might even want to be with me), I don't go with them unless forced into the situation.
It's very hard to explain. Does anybody else get this?

It's one of the few things about my brain that I don't understand. Good to know it's also related to AS it seems.

Yes, but I have trained myself to be able to work decently in groups. This is a valuable skill to learn. The reason is that I would rather work alone because I am perfectly competent to do whatever it is that people need me to do and having other people around only hinders me.

I get it, but it's also different in a way. I'm not forced into groups (most of the time). My instructors have learned what happens when that's done with me (meltdown). Even when I am in a group, forced or not, I still work by myself, regardless, because I find that I'm more reliable when it comes to studying/working than NTs in my college. The instructors don't say anything, the other students don't say anything. For me, it's a win-win situation.

I'm sorry you have to go through that. I had that humiliation every single time we had to form our own groups. It was hard, but you forget about it, again, and again, until the happy day where you have finished school. Hold out. :)

Me too... in school I always dreaded having to work in groups or in pairs. Gym was even worse!

But I don't dread it. I want to be in a group with people I like. But my AS prohibits me from standing up and choosing my partners. It usually must be forced.

Hrm... Not nearly as badly as what I had to put up with in high school, but yes I have trouble with this too.

Personally I'd say take the initiative if there's people you can actually stand, force yourself to ask. At least that way you don't have to pull all the weight for the utterly imcompetent, as high-school groupings tend to have a problem regarding.

(then again, this comes from a bird who has all the subconscious social skills of a pet rock and thus favors conscious reaction. ^_~ )
