Hey,

My mother is pushing me to attend New York Institute of Technology's summer program, Introduction to Independence (I to I) in Central Islip, Long Island. The thing is, I really don't want to go, but if anyone on WP has attended this program, can you give me some reviews?

Is it more towards people with lower function autism?
Do I really learn anything from this?

I'm dragged up there for an interview tomorrow unfortunately.

And how do I get my mother to change her mind?

HELP!?!?!?

Get a summer job in or near Cherry Hill? In other words, initiate something that demonstrates a major move towards independence.

UPDATE: I did NOT get accepted into the Summer independence program... my mother was kind of forcing me to take part of it.... we both went up for the interview a couple weeks ago, and i was showing signs of no interest in going to the people who run the program

here are some takeaways if i was accepted

in the dorms: NO computers or TVs, but acceptable in the fall
Not allowed to leave campus by yourself
No having girls in the same dorm room (because the minimum age is 16) but is acceptable in the fall

I just felt there was not enough freedom for me if went to the summer program, especially if i miss out on job opportunities back home or at the Jersey Shore

I would have been okay if i was sent there for the Fall program

I guess, like many aspies, im just used to the whole rejection BS that happens to us daily

Wait, am I reading this correctly as legal adults not being "allowed" to leave campus by themselves?

At least for the summer program, because there are students that would attend who are 16+

And there is a memorial there for a student in the summer of 2010 who left campus by himself, with his headphones on, and he got hit and killed by a car off campus

You are 22 years old. Your mother cannot force you to take the class. Do you honestly think she will stop giving you support on the basis of one class? Also, I took interpersonal communications in the hopes it would improve my social skills, but it was a joke. Tell her you don't want her to waste her money on a class like that.
