Sports Science Degrees - What are they good for anyway?

Some say they can be taken as a pre - med but few Sports Science majors in my university see it that way or have any plans of going to medicine. Around 20 - 35% of the subjects are pre - med worthy. Many people see the word "Sport or Exercise" and sign up.

Is a Sports Science Degree relevant? I notice many of them are varsity athletes.
