So, I'm not sure if it's like this everywhere (would like to know about the US, although funding is still a disaster there AFAIK)... but in the UK it almost seems like people think unis exist everywhere... because it's usually seamless (from my perspective at least) for people in counties which don't have a uni to go to one... and of course it may be easy for people who have a monolithic support network or something... but for a person who barely gets talked to once a week IRL, well... teleportation doesn't exist yet. Of course, from my perspective it's worse that in the US it's pretty much plutocratic, but... well, like everywhere usually anyway, it's still easier if one lives right next to a uni...
