I am hoping to continue and earn my Bachelor's degree in Psychology but I have hit a road block that I don't know how to get around. I was wondering if anyone else is having this or had this problem. I need extra time on tests and a note-taker. I am being told to get this smart-pen to take notes for me. The problem is the only way I will grasp what the teacher is saying is reading their lips, since my auditory processing disorder keeps me from fully grasping all the verbal words. If I try to take notes during it I end up hearing nothing. Yes the idea of something recording the notes is a great idea, but I really wish I could get it in visual words that I can read rather than hear. So now, I am unsure of how to get around this. Any ideas?

If only the professor would allow you to use a smart phone with the ability to take dictation--using his words.

Eventually, something will be developed that would have the range to allow dictation from a decent distance.

Could you film the class and then watch it and take notes at home, etc?

Do you have an actual diagnosis?

If you do, the school must make reasonable accommodations. Extra time for tests and a note-taker aren't extraordinary. You should be able to get this easily, IF you have a diagnosis that warrants it.

Hell, I don't need those accommodations, but they're offered to me every term.

Filming the class, that sounds like a good suggestion. Then as I watch it over and over I would be able to read the professors lips as well as hear what is going on. Thank you for this suggestion.

The college I was just at made reasonable accommodations like extra time for tests and a note-taker. But they said if they find someone then I will have notes if they don't then they can't do much for me. As in the school won't push to help me which isn't fair.

If the smart pen is what I'm thinking of, you turn it on and it audio records as you also make marks on the special notepad that comes with it. You could draw a picture for a particular part. Then you make a mark, write a word, or draw a picture for another section when they start talking about something else. That way you can jump around visually, pull up the audio recording, and it'll jog your memory of actually being there in class.
