So I've signed up to take my high school math and science equivalency by correspondence.
My plan is this: come the Fall of 2016 I want to have the prerequisites for the one-year medical lab assistant course.
I used to work as a cashier/customer service but my anxiety makes this impossible now. I currently work as a cleaner which is fine, but the pay sucks and there's really nothing move up to.
So I need to get grade 11 math and chemistry and grade 12 math. I really struggled with math in high school, so I'll have to see if I can do it.
Has anyone else studied in this field?

You're really smart, then--almost an autodidact.

I thought you had a university education.

I think this field will be very, very useful in the coming years, owing to the Baby Boomer generation (i.e., me!)

That's what I'm thinking.
I have Bachelor of Arts, but it's in philosophy and classics - my mandatory science credit was Astronomy 101. Lol

I need to get the math to apply to the college program. Not sure yet how I'll fare with it.

I wonder, since you're on benefits, if you could get free Kaplan-type tutoring or classes in Grade 11/12 math and science.

This is really a time when benefits are beneficial, if they do provide this free stuff.

I really don't think you could go too much wrong with anything in the medical field over the coming years. Medical Lab Assistant is less "social" than most other jobs in the medical field.

I guess there are different academic streams that one can pursue in the program. One of which is taking blood samples. I would rather do stuff in the lab though, so I'll probably take that route.

I could likely find some way to get someone to pay for the high school equivalencey, but the cost is marginal. I will probably just pay for it myself.

And if I can't do the grade eleven math, I will have to seek opportunity elsewhere.

There are good tutors out there for Grade 11 math.

In the US, it's not Calculus--it's trigonometry. I think, once you get the basic formulas down, you'll probably be okay. It has to do with the triangle and its angles.

Right - geometry stuff. Isn't algebra in there too. I was better at algebra.

I think it's mostly geometry--there's probably algebra there, too, in the overall curriculum.

I dropped out of math in grade 11 (after scoring 100% on a test, lol.) I couldn't stand the manner the class was taught in, which was speed and competitive problem solving. It stressed me out so much that I've avoided math for over 25 years.
I spoke to the college today and the fee is $50 for the 15/16 term regardless of how many credits I take. Because it's the adult education wing of the public high school system. Ontario is awesome!
So my course starts October 27. She said to go ahead and try to do grade 12 even though I don't have eleven. She says they have tutors to help us.
