Quote:
The researchers traced the phenomenon back to what they called the "self-esteem movement" that emerged in the 1980s, asserting that the effort to build self-confidence had gone too far.

As an example, Twenge cited a song commonly sung to the tune of "Frere Jacques" in preschool: "I am special, I am special. Look at me."

"Current technology fuels the increase in narcissism," Twenge said. "By its very name, MySpace encourages attention-seeking, as does YouTube."

...generalizations. This would imply that someone with AS can't (or likely won't) be narcissistic. That's far from the truth.

It's not just college students, narcissism is 'normal' now, for everyone.

Yeah, you're right and I didn't really mean to say it. It's hypocritical considering I am quite liberal and hate other people's generalisations/stereotyping.

I am not narcissistic, but I have big ambitions in life, and I sometimes come across as narcissistic.

It's mandatory that a person has at least a small amount of self-love, not vanity, otherwise that person would come across as having low self-esteem. The media enjoys throwing inaccurate generalizations out 'there', into society, so there is something to talk about.

If the 'youtube-narcissitic-"I am so special" ' generation wasn't so 'self-centered',hypothetically speaking, then the media might come out with the generalization that the modern youth should be the "low self-esteem" generation.

No one is special. We are all equal human beings. If we start labelling people as special, then we regret it later when they become dictators and try to massacre all the "unspecial" people.

I think narcisism is a pathetic disease that intereferes with our ability as humans to work together towards a common goal. Narcisism creates hatred and greed, which lead to war, famine, rape, murder, basically everything bad.

Yep, it's everywhere. Look at modern music. It's just people shouting "HEY LOOK AT ME! PAY ATTENTION TO ME!" over canned melodies.
