I am currently taking Biology 308 at the junior college that is semi-close to my house. I just love all the stuff we are learning - such as the difference between mitosis (MY-toe-sis) and meiosis (MY-oh-sis) and what cellular respiration is. It is, in the words of Spock, "Fascinating." I can never wait for a Tuesday or Thursday so that I can go to my class and learn more about such things. Because I have a learning disability, I have a note taker named Gregg (not to be confused with my friend named Greg). He is Japanese, and very down-to earth - a real nice guy. Though he was only supposed to be my note taker, we ended up as friends because he has some of the same interests that I do (ie. Star Wars and anime). We have our second exam on Thursday, and I am not nervous at all. This is not to say that I do not care about it, but that I am very confident that I will pass with a higher grade. (I got a 65 on the first exam.) So I am sure I will get a 75 or maybe an 85. I think that is due to the fact that my mom has been helping me study for this exam - and also due to the fact that I actually care about my class and whether or not I pass it. (I took History 311 last semester and got a D because I rarely studied.)

Sherri Graves. Just the name alone is enough to send shivers down my spine and make me very hyper. She is my biology professor, and I just love her. Each time I see her, I want to give her a big hug - and maybe kiss her cheek. I think I might have a slight crush on her. Or maybe more than a slight crush. Which is not good because of what happened with my Spanish 402 professor. But I think I will be okay because I have resolved to myself that I will keep these feelings I have under wraps and never, EVER tell her how I feel about her. I felt the same way about my Spanish 401 professor, Arieta Salanova. I was enamored with her, as well. The weird thing is, I almost never tell women how I really feel about them, but with men, I tend to be more open about my feelings. I wonder why that is...maybe I will form a hypothesis and find some way to test it out.

Yes, it is. After I started taking the class, I decided I might like to major in biology after I finish high school (I'm a senior now).

I have to say I'm very happy to hear your enthusiasm about my favorite subject! I am a freshman biology major and I couldn't be more interested in the discipline. I am learning pretty much the same things that you are (it's Biology 101, general bio). I think what I found the most fascinating, however, was learning about the cell membrane and the regulatory functions of the carrier proteins (I'm definitely doing histology and cell biology as electives next year).

Also, I think the idea of taking junior college classes as a highschooler is a smart idea. I did as well, and found it a very rewarding experience that took some of the mystery and fear out of the college experience (I took Earth Science 1 & 2, and Anatomy and Physiology). I wouldn't sweat the 65 that much, biology is a rigorous subject for anyone, and it simply takes time to adapt to the pace and workload of the course (I got a 71 on the first exam). I also really like my professor. I wish he was my wacky uncle or something. :P

Have fun in your class!

(Sorry about the double posting, everyone...)

Sherri Graves, Sherri Graves, Sherri Graves. I love my biology professor so much, it is driving me insane. Today I went to class before my exam - just to say hello to her, and when I saw her, I got major butterflies in my stomach. Like I said in my last journal, I always want to hug her and maybe kiss her cheek. I always sit in the front of the class for two reasons: so I can see her better, and so I can be as close as possibe to her. When this class is over, I am going to be very sad because I will miss (my) Sherri. Well, she is not really mine, so to speak, but secretly I think of her as mine. I can be very possessive of people. Right now, all I want is to e-mail her, but I cannot think of an excuse that would not arouse her suspicions.

SHERRI, I LOVE YOU!

Exam 2. It went okay, I hope. I will not really know until next Thursday (probably). Sherri takes her sweet time handing things back - with the exception of the mini-quizzes we have in class. Each day we have class, without fail, she hands them back, and I (almost) always do really well. I usually get 4/5, 5/5, and sometimes 6/5 (if I get the extra credit question right). I really think that I may have gotten a 75 or an 85 on this exam. I hope to Vulcan that I do get an 85, because I would feel very good about myself. Who knows, though? Maybe I will get a score that is higher than an 85 - like a 95! I know I should not count my chickens before they hatch, but I am totally confident that I did really well on this exam.

That's very good to hear. My second exam is next Thursday, I think that if you feel you did well, chances are you probably did pretty well, since Biology isn't subjective; you either know it or you don't. Just out of curiosity, what topics did this exam cover, and what will you be studying next?

I met with my biology professor today. He has an extra-credit thing where you study five chapters and he'll pull one of the chapter titles at random from a bowl, and then you have to discuss it with him for about ten minutes. You can get a maximum of ten extra-credit points, depending on the quality of the discussion. He gave me a seven, saying that I had a good grasp of the general concept, but should study a bit more on the details concerning enzymes (the topic was metabolism). He's a botanist and such a great guy. Totally friendly and brilliant.
