I have been homeschooled for basically my whole school career, including high school. I am currently studying electronics and some college level math to prepare for technical school.

Anyone also been homeschooled for at least part of their life? Does anyone else prefer to study on their own and contact the author(s) of the textbooks they're reading for clarification on details and other help? Does anyone else like homeschooling over public/private schooling?

I haven't been homeschooled, but I did homeschooling. Since I did it in such isolation, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts about (besides that you liked it more than conventional schooling) it if you don't mind.

I can relate to contacting the author(s) of textbooks for clarification of details.

I homeschooled 3rd grade and parts of 7th and 8th... but for me it was mostly just an excuse to not go to school. My lazy ass accomplished nothing, and looking back I think I learned about as much as I would have had I attended public school. God bless the American education system.

I was. Overall it was a positive experience; I got to really focus on science and even go to college year early.

What would you like to know?

I enjoy the freedom from distraction and anxiety from other classmates, I like being able to focus on one subject at a time without having to continuously switch, I like not having to use public restrooms, I don't like having to do housework because I am home though (I would rather just study all the time and keep learning more, but no - the dishes have changed colors three times and now I need to clean them :P ) So what would you like to know?

You already summed it up nicely...thank you.

My question for homeschoolers is an interesting one, particularly when related to people with AS.

I feel that I learned more social skills because I was at the school enviroment. My mom looks back and wonders if she should have homeschooled me, but I feel like if I was homeschool I would not have any social skills and would be far worse and far more stereotypically AS. I see NT folks at my college who were homeschooled, and they have very bad social skills -- worse than my own.

Do you feel like you missed out on perhaps developing some social skills?

Yes and no. There are always co-ops and Church and other social activities you could do. It's not like you're locked away until you're 80. As much as I may have "missed out on" some things there are some things I'm glad I missed out on too. It's pretty much a cost/benefit analysis depending on what you're going for.

I never have been homeschooled, and believe me, you are not missing anything good, most likely avoiding things that would distract you and disrupt your learning process, as you stated here, by useless things from there, so that's good.

I attended school until the end of June in Year 9 after completing my SATs. There were then a number of problems with the STAFF at there school than didn’t want to know me because i have AS. In the September went to enrol at another local school which has a specialist Autistic Unit however me and my parents decided not to take the place at the school because I wasn’t accepted a place in the Autistic Unit (I wish id took the place now!) So in the October I returned to the school I had been at previously and then in the February of Year 10 I was threatened with Permanent Exclusion so my parents, me and the LEA came to a agreement that I would be home schooled. I did this until the end of Year 11 and ended up with some good GCSE results (7 B’s & 1 C!) which I was pleased with. During this time however I went to another local secondary school a few times a week which I used to enjoy doing.

I then took the decision to enrol at Sixth Form (this September) at the school I was going to go to at the beginning of Year 10. Now after looking back at the three and a bit month I’ve had there so far I wish id gone there in Year 10! I’ve made some great friends with the other students there, get on with the teachers and I am enjoying studying there. I also take the bus daily to / from school with a few other students who get on well – except one annoying Year 7 (she has received the nickname of “Questions”!).

So overall home schooling does work as proved here but you do need to be involved in other activities as well to avoid becoming isolated.

i always wished that i could have been home schooled! However i guess that my mother noticed my deep desire to not have to interact with other children and instead just learn, so it never eventuated. I wish it had

Certainly. I might not even be on this forum if I wasn't homeschooled.

I was homeschooled 1st-6th in a program where we turned in homework samples once every two weeks. I never really did anything except what I liked, such as finishing my 2nd grade math book in 4 weeks, and reading all of the reading book but completely neglecting the writing related stuff. When it came to turning in samples of stuff I hadn't sone, my parents would help me do just the pages that needed to be turned in the night before. Oddly enogh, my testing scores were always above average.

7th grade, since we moved and had to find a new program, I ended up doing nothing at all.

8th grade I convinced my parents to send me to public school since I thought I was missing out. I ended up becoming class president and holding high honors in all classes... but practically failing gym. Also, I was accepted into an "Ivy League" high school.

9th, we moved again so I ended up doing nothing again. 10th-12th I did independant study.

Of all the years in my life, 8th grade is the only time I feel I got close to having friends.

I was homeschooled from age 11.5 to age 14. I had an English class with a bunch of other homeschoolers and a chemistry class as well, in the basement of one of the homeschooling families we knew. All other courses I learned on my own from textbooks, with minimal direction from my mother. I learned an unbelievable amount of information. I decided to go through high school instead of entering college early because I felt that (in spite of the socialization I had in the homeschooling groups) my social skills were not up to par. In retrospect I realize that it was my AS I was noticing. Homeschooling wasn't to blame.

I did homeschool for a year or two. In retrospect it worked very well since I did almost all the required work for each day in only an hour (except for english which I was bad at) and for the rest of the day I could study whatever I wanted.

I wish I was homeschooled (I hate high school).
