I'm considering transferring to a new school. Due to AS I cannot live on campus and therefore commute.

My social anxiety disorders prevent me from driving with anyone else (aka no carpools) and I obviously need a parking pass. If push comes to shove as far as parking availability, would my diagnosis give me higher priority on the parking list?

(I'll probably get down to get an application as soon as the place that does them opens so I should be safe, but just in case, should I bring a doc's note with me since it would be medically, well, more psychologically, necessary?)

Are you asking if you can get a handicap spot? If so, I severely doubt it.

No, just a regular parking spot. I wouldn't qualify for handicap anyways since there is nothing physically wrong with me.

Just concerned if I have to work the day they go on sale for the semester. If I don't I will be first in line.

This would really depend on your school's permit system.

The several schools I have been to have different systems.
My current school has one generic pass for all visitors not counting staff and disabled.

UAF (University of Alaska at Fairbanks), back when I was there went through two systems.
The first was like what I have now.
The second came along later but caused a lot of problems.

UAF has a unique situation in that some parking spaces have electricity provided for your block/battery heater for the sub-zero temps in the Fall and Spring semesters.
But... not all spaced have plug-ins available.
The farthest away did have warm bus stops while you waited for the shuttle.

The spaces closest to the buildings were 'Gold Pass' spots (or something like that) and cost some horrendous amount of money.
Originally, you could not park in that space if you did not have your GoldPass... even if the space was empty... these were reserved spaces.... which the majority of students and quite a few staff members could not afford.

After the uproar, the university changed the policy to allow anyone with the correct color pass to park in the spaces after a certain time of day... sort of back to the "first-come-first-parked" policy of old.

Anyway...

You really need to contact the Safety/Law Enforcement/Parking Enforcement office at your school to really find out what they will do for you. Asking here is probably not going to give you much help unless someone knows what school you are attending and has experience with that school also.

Ah, so basically just advise what I do at my current school...I come early to jockey for a good space near the building.

I'm also looking into other nearby garages that aren't run by that school, I hear they exist and I plan on driving by that way next week to check them out...I'd obviously have to walk but if I could be guaranteed a space and maybe get a better rate I would try it. Of course, I'd have to worry about icy sidewalks...I have no traction whatsoever.

Thought I'd point out to you that you are not telling us much.

Like I mentioned earlier... each University makes up it's own parking policies... at least here in the U.S.
Each one figures out what they want to charge for parking and how to collect.

You've basically asked a question for which there is no right answer without knowing what school you are attending.

I don't even know what part of the world you are in so I have no idea if my experience relates to yours at all.

The only way... repeat... THE ONLY WAY for you to get correct information is to go to the school itself and find out what options are available.

You mention icy conditions? Is there a shuttle bus to school from the parking areas around it?
Is there a city bus that goes to campus?
We have a regional bus system that spans between something like 7 communities and has bike carriers on the front as well.
There are a good number of students that ride these buses to the college I attend as well as the university two towns North.

I don't know if your issues surrounding carpooling extend to public transportation or not, so I put this in here.

I hope you can figure out something that will not only allow you reliable regular transportation, but backup/emergency transport also.
:D

After reading things over again, I'd suggest checking to see if your school has something like a Disabled Student Services department.
Mine does and with my ADD/HD, I was ushered over there for my academic counseling.

If your school does have a department like that, perhaps they know if the school would give you a special parking spot or permit.

I'll get in touch with both the parking guys and the office there...I'm still in the process of deciding where to go but good parking is a factor I'm looking at. I actually already sent an e-mail to the transportation guys asking them what other parking garages are around there so I can rate/availability shop. Also will be doing that with the other schools I'm considering.

I don't really have a problem with buses since you can sit pretty far apart from anyone else, the only trouble is I couldn't find a route from my area to there. Perhaps there's a route I didn't see on there but our port authority around here is scaling back big time on routes so I'd have to consider that as well. If there was a bus route though, I'd probably use park and ride on days I didn't want to drive/hunt for parking spaces.
