Really angry with college
sory if this has already been mentioned.
I'm so angry with college (the disability cordinator in particular).
I was diagnosed an Aspie about a month ago and me and my parents are fighting for me to get provisions for exams ( computer and a seperate room).
college keep saying there's not a lot they can do and it annoys me. (well it more than annoys me, but I'll refrain from bad language!).
The way they see it is that 'you have coped all this time, therefore you don't need provisions'.. when in fact I haven't coped! I just didnt know what was wrong with me!
Another thing that annoys me is the fact that this disability cordinator keeps belittling my condition and infers that dislexia is far worse.
He also infers that I have just randomly taken the word 'asperger's' from the air just so that I can get provisions.
It was parents evening day before yesterday and my mum spoke to this man and said she'll have to talk to the education authorities and he just said in a very rude manner 'they won't talk to you!'... meh, yes they *** will!
anyway, I could easily go to the paper and bring this college down and say that it's no place for a diabled child!
he keeps saying he wants a letter from my psychiatrist (which he's had but he's not bothered to read it) and my pdoc stated that they need to listen to my needs... which they're failing to do!).
They want the pdoc to be more specific so my pdoc's getting annoyed.
anyway, my psychiatric nurse and psychiatrist are plannig a supprise meeting with college which should be a shock to them I hope something is done, otherwise I may have to take it further.
anyone understand where I'm coming from?
oh this cordinator also seems to believe that asperger's goes away with time... haha!
evidently, he knows very little.

That guy seems like an idiot. It took a long time for me to get help as well. The school didn't care unless I had a proper statement. If they'd have helped then I might not have spent two years out of school but I'm back now. I hope that you get the help that you should rightfully get from the college.
Good luck.

The behaviour patterns demonstrated by this character are absolutely typical of a person who habitually evades responsibility. This kind of social parasite -who is paid to help but chooses to hinder because doing nothing is easier for him- will be familiar to many members of this forum.
The strategy to deal with this kind of parasite involves making them realise that their 'professional' lives will become far harder if they persist in evading their responsibilities to you.

This sounds like an excellent idea! Let us know how you get on.
Magliabechi.
Take this as far as you need to take it. Whatever you do, don't let yourself be bullied. This guy needs to learn that he can't...
DISCRIMINATE
(which is what he's doing and I'm pretty sure it's illegal in the UK)
and get away with it. If he's not convinced by your doctors, then maybe a nice media circus will get his ass moving.
I've found that threatening people with bad publicity works really well when you can't afford a lawyer or can't be bothered to get one. Besides, it's just fun to watch their reaction.
This guy sounds like a really ignorant jerk who shouldn't be in his job as he clearly doesn't have a clue what AS is. You should fight this as he is clearly on the losing side. Fortunatly my university been really good to me when it comes to exam arrangements, in fact they offered more than I asked for. But good luck
That's a somewhat judgmental comment. People need help with different things. Technically AS is a disability and because of it, I have struggled all my life with schooling without knowing the reason why, so it upsets me when someone like yourself comes along and tries to undermine my situation. You don't know me.
AS is a spectrum disorder, don't forget that... some may suffer worse than others... judging by your comment, you're a lucky one.

It affects different people in different ways. Counting myself, I personally know (at least) 5 people diagnosed with Asperger's. Three of us are more high-functioning and need little (if any) help and accommodation, but the other two are much more severely affected and are not likely to be able to live independently without support. Those two are still very intelligent, but they have difficulties and challenges that get in their way. They are not using ASD as a "crutch," and they can't will away their problems simply by "trying harder." I personally only have one accommodation right now, and that is the use of a quiet testing room for exams. Given my auditory processing disorder, this is not unreasonable, as I am unable to focus in crowded, noisy rooms. The OP is requesting this same accommodation in addition to the use of a computer (presumably to type exams instead of handwriting them). This also is not an inordinate request- many Aspies have terrible handwriting, and on a more extreme level there are high levels of comorbidity between AS and dysgraphia. Typing instead of handwriting exams and taking tests in a quiet room don't fundamentally alter the nature of the work and don't give any unfair advantage, so I see no reason why those services should not be available for people who need them.

My comment was a bit off topic. I got all the things you are talking about, like more time for math and writing on the computer. I took the regents exam, and that was a shoein pretty much. What I'm against is the social help people expect from their colleges, and the fact they act like the colleges have to go above and beyond. But hey maybe things are different in the UK, who knows.

I have Dysgraphia.
The reason why I'm asking for a seperate room si because like you, I have problems with sensory overloads... crowds, noises etc.
I failed my psychology exam last year simply because I could not do it, I was so angered by other students sniffing and coughing and listening to the sound of breathing even... it makes me very angry to the point where I came close to shouting the exam room down.
I'm asking for a computer because of the dysgraphia. No-one can read my hand writing and I've had numerous teachers have a go at me threatning that my exam won't be marked if they can't read it.
I'm also very disorganised with writing on paper... I cannot form logical sentences etc when I handwrite.
finally, I have a pain that's more than just a simple writer's cramp... the best way I can describe it, is that the pain goes through my arm, into my neck and even down my back.

I'm not expecting my college to go ubove and beyond. technically, they should also be helping me with my learning, but it' to late for that... i have to teach myself.
I need exam provisions so that i am equal to other students... they're the ones who have an unfair advantage compared to me.

A friend of mine in high school who was in every single one of my classes senior year had a permanent cold and (apparently) some sort of objection to tissues. During tests, every 4-6 seconds would come a loud, distinctive *SNIFF* I wish I could also type my exams, not only to make it easier on myself but for the sake of my professors- I feel terrible handing in five pages of chicken scratch that even I can't decipher, and expecting them to have to read it. Also, I never learned to write "correctly" despite the best efforts of my elementary school teachers, and can't write for extended periods of time without severe writer's cram. My handwriting is also painstakingly slow, which makes it difficult to finish on time.
In high school, I bombed several tests because of sensory overload issues. (I had no accommodations in high school)

People get social help from their colleges? Since when? I've never gotten that. I have a hard enough time getting things like a separate testing room. I definitely don't get extra time, and will never qualify for that. I am not permitted to write on the computer. My university does not go above and beyond, at least not in terms of disability services.
I think it might be somewhat different in the UK. When I was accepted to Oxford, they offered a whole range of services and accommodations, most of which I would never need. Testing accommodations, someone to take notes for me, permission to record all the lectures, and a slew of other things as well. They even offered to guarantee me that they would never make scheduling changes that could impact my routines without giving me advance notice.
